Persaud Plans To Replace Iconic Canarsie Sign
State Senator Roxanne Persaud (D-Canarsie, East New York, Brownsville, Mill Basin, Sheepshead Bay, Bergen Beach, Marine Park, Flatlands, Mill Island, Georgetown, Ocean Hill, Starrett City) is working on replacing the “Welcome to Canarsie” Sign at the entrance of the Belt Parkway.
According to the Senator, the current sign has served visitors and residents well but has outlived its expected usefulness. The updated sign is expected soon and was first brought to the attention of Persaud after concerned citizens mention it’s dilapidated state.
“The importance of street signs cannot be overstated. I am happy to work with the company to ensure that we have a new sign in a timely manner,” said Persaud.
Perry Lauds Bill Creating Statewide Commission On Prosecutorial Conduct
Assembly member Nick Perry (D-East Flatbush, Canarsie, Brownsville) applauded Governor Andrew Cuomo yesterday for signing a bill that will create a commission to investigate complaints of misconduct by county prosecutors.
The new legislation will form an 11-member panel to receive and investigate complaints of misconduct by the district attorneys and their assistants. The commission’s findings will be made available to the public and referred to the governor, who has the power to remove a prosecutor from office. The bill already is receiving push back from the District Attorneys Association of the State of New York, who already plans to challenge the bill, according to recent reports.
“Today, all New Yorkers who believe that trust in our justice system is a bedrock in the foundation of our democracy can rejoice. Henceforth, we all now live in a state which will provide a much needed system of checks and balances to the powerful office of the prosecutor. This new law creates an avenue, not previously available, but now open for any New Yorker who is a victim of an unprincipled prosecutor to seek justice,” said Perry.
“This bill, for sure, is a direct attack on a serious, and surely unintended flaw in our criminal justice system that contributed to New York State’s unenviable reputation as a leader in convicting innocent men and women, often times due to the unscrupulous misconduct of a handful of bad prosecutors across our great state who cared more about getting a conviction rather than justice,” added Perry.
