Golden’s Bill For World Trade Center Rescue Workers Headed To Governor’s Desk
State Senator Marty Golden’s (R-Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights, Bensonhurst, Marine Park, Gerritsen Beach, Gravesend) announced yesterday that his bill aimed at extending the disability filing period for World Trade Center rescue participants is headed to the Governor’s desk for final review.
The legislation, bill S7797, extends the deadline for participants in World Trade Center (WTC) rescue, recovery, or clean-up operations to file a Notice of Participation from 2018 until 2022, provided the 9/11-related disability occurred between September 11, 2015 and September 11, 2017, among other provisions.
“This critical legislation extends the period for our 9/11 first responders who have not yet filed a notice of participation to do so,” said Golden.
“Additionally, this legislation allows for those who had their applications denied to have that application reconsidered. Our first responder heroes of 9/11 deserve assistance in getting any benefit for which they are entitled,” added Golden.
Menchaca Demands Immediate Release of Undocumented Pizza Delivery Man
City Council member Carlos Menchaca (D-Red Hook, Sunset Park) alongside Speaker Corey Johnson submitted a letter of support urging the immediate release of an undocumented pizza delivery man yesterday.
On Monday, the lawmakers demanded the release of Pablo Antonio Villavicencio-Calderon, an Ecuadorian immigrant who was handed over to immigration officials earlier this month after attempting to deliver a pizza at Fort Hamilton.
Calderon was questioned by a military soldier on the base, who asked for his immigration documents as he went to deliver the pizza. The incident led the soldier to call immigration enforcement agents on the father of two, who now faces potential deportation and fears separation from his family.
“Pablo is a hard-working father of two beautiful daughters and husband to Ms. Sandra Chica — all of whom are U.S. Citizens. It is a tragedy that he was turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement just for making a pizza delivery at the Fort Hamilton U.S. Army base. Pablo’s detention presents an unjustifiable separation of families and illustrates the alarming pattern of targeting hard working immigrants solely for providing for their families,” read the statement.
