Adams Mourns Tragic Death of Golden Krust Founder

Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams

Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams mourned the death of CEO and Golden Krust Founder Lowell Hawthorne yesterday.

According to initial reports, on Saturday police responded to a 911 call about an emotionally disturbed person armed with a gun at the Golden Krust bakery and warehouse in the Bronx. Hawthorne was found on the floor with a single gunshot wound to the head and a handgun lying nearby, sources said.

The incident is being investigated as a suicide amid rumors the businessman cheated as many as 100-plus workers at the Golden Crust plant out of overtime pay. A suit remains pending in Manhattan federal court over the claim.

“Lowell was a friend to me and tens of thousands of New Yorkers, serving as an inspiration to entrepreneurs of color in the example of his own immigrant story. Through the humble Jamaican patty, he introduced Caribbean culture to people across America. I send my support to Lowell’s family at this difficult time,” said Adams.

“As we try to comprehend this painful loss, we reflect on the importance of community and support networks to help handle life’s difficult challenges. In this holiday season, which can be a silent struggle for many among us, I ask those in need to reach out and speak out if and when they have personal pain. None of us are alone,” added Adams.

North Brooklyn Lawmakers Protest Lack of Communication From MTA Over L Train Shutdown

City Councilman Stephen Levin
City Councilman Antonio Reynoso

City Council members Stephen Levin (D-Brooklyn Heights, DUMBO, Williamsburg, Boerum Hill) and Antonio Reynoso (D-Williamsburg, Bushwick) alongside Assembly member Joseph Lentol (D-Williamsburg, Greenpoint) and State Senator Martin Dilan (D–Bushwick, Williamsburg, Greenpoint, Cypress Hills, City-Line, East New York, Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brownsville) will protest the lack of communication over the upcoming L Train closure with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) today.

Assemblyman Joe Lentol
Sen. Martin Dilan

The group will join together with riders and advocates to demand a report of the current plans for transportation remediation, a serious discussion around help for local businesses, and any street use changes proposed by the Department of Transportation (DOT).

Additionally, the group will call for a commitment by the responsible agencies and their contractors to meet with a community advisory board on a monthly basis starting in January 2018.

The L Train shutdown is expected to commence in April 2019 and last 15 months. The closure will be between Manhattan and Brooklyn and is expected to affect over 200,000 riders. The MTA announced the plans to repair the battered train tunnels in the wake of Hurricane Sandy earlier this year.

The event is slated for 9:30 a.m., today, Nov. 5, at 379 Union Avenue in Williamsburg.

Persaud To Host Health Forum

State Sen. Roxanne Persaud

Senator Roxanne Persaud (D-Canarsie, East New York, Brownsville, Mill Basin, Sheepshead Bay, Bergen Beach, Marine Park, Flatlands, Mill Island, Georgetown) will host a Health Forum this week.

The event is part of Persaud’s outreach into the community to provide constituents with ease of access to city services and resources. The event comes off the heels of Persaud’s mobile office hours that brought city agencies directly to constitutents.

The event is slated for 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Nov. 9, at New Lots Library at 665 New Lots Avenue in East New York.

Malliotakis Seeks Increased Bus Service Between BK & Staten Island

Assembly Member Nicole Malliotakis

Assembly member Nicole Malliotakis (R-Bay Ridge, Staten Island) urged the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) to add additional busses to the S79 bus route yesterday.

In a letter to the MTA, colleagues from both sides of the Verrazano Bridge, demanded additional bus service to the route during rush hours to shorten the length of the trip for passengers and incentivize more residents to trust the transit system.

The S79 bus line runs between Bay Ridge, Brooklyn and the Staten Island Mall, but as of recently has had an insufficient number of buses during peak hours leading to long lines and wait times at the stops before going over the bridge.

“The S79 is a Select Bus Service Route, so clearly we want the bus to be utilized as much as possible to ease congestion on Hylan Boulevard in Staten Island.  Less wait time will also appeal to those seeking to avoid the bridge toll and dense city traffic,” the letter reads.

Colton To Host Conversation On 100% Clean Renewable Energy

Assembly Member William Colton

Assembly member William Colton (D-) will host a conversation on 100% Affordable & Clean Renewable Energy with environmental leaders this week.

The event will focus on topics such as air, water food and land quality as it relates to health and the changing environment.

Earlier this year, Colton introduced energy bill A 5105, that would require New York State to drastically change the energy grid in a cost-effective and efficient way. The bill requires the state to establish a 100% clean energy system by 2030.

The event is slated for 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Dec 13, at Il Centro Italian Community Center, at 8711 18th Avenue in Bath Beach.
