Hamilton, BK Lawmakers Fight To Get Octogenarian Grandmother Back Into Home
Senator Jesse Hamilton (D-Central Brooklyn) alongside other Brooklyn elected officials and 50 tenant leaders from the Flatbush Tenant Coalition will demand that Ms. Joy P.Noel, an 80-year-old grandmother, be returned to apartment.
Earlier this year, Noel was evicted from the Flatbush apartment that was her home for more than 20 years. The landlord Isaac Jacobowitz of Carnegie Management, started an eviction proceeding against Noel falsely claiming she refused to sign a lease renewal. However, according to Noel, she was unaware of the court case because it was filed with the wrong zip code and her name was misspelled. She ended up losing the case by default after not showing up to court while away for medical treatment. When Noel returned from her trip, all her belongings had been removed from her apartment and she was left homeless.
The group is claiming Noel’s eviction is part of an aggressive pattern of building-wide and Brooklyn-wide harassment by Jacobowitz who is also using the weak rent laws to try to deregulate Noel’s entire 65-unit building all in one fell swoop, through the “substantial rehabilitation” loophole. The group demands that Ms. Noel get her home back and that the landlord be held accountable for his harassment and displacement.
“Standing together, we put Carnegie Management and all landlords on notice: our community will stand up for our rights and the rights of our neighbors. We will not permit tenants to be treated with contempt. That’s the only reasonable description of the horrifying circumstance Joy P. Noel faced – having just returned from medical treatment to find her home was no longer hers. I stand with her, the Flatbush Tenant Coalition, community leaders and advocates to say the rights of tenants will be vindicated. Together, we will not be pushed out or pushed aside. We will not be sidelined or denied our day in court. And whether through the courts or in the legislature, we will continue to uphold all tenants’ rights,” said Hamilton.
The event is slated for 10 a.m., today, Nov. 13, at 585 East 21st Street in Ditmas Park.
BP Adams,Williams, Bichotte Salute Veterans Day
Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams and City Council member Jumaane Williams (D-Flatbush, East Flatbush, Midwood) and Assembly member Rodneyse Bichotte (D-Ditmas Park, East Flatbush) celebrated Veteran’s Day over the weekend by honoring those who have served and continue to serve in the armed forces.
On Saturday, veterans across the five boroughs were honored for their service as the nation celebrated the national holiday. The day’s festivities also included the 99th Annual Veterans Day Parade down Fifth Avenue that was grand marshaled by astronaut Buzz Aldrin.
“There are more than 18 million veterans living across America today, thousands of whom hail from or currently reside in our borough of Brooklyn. We may not always recognize them out of their military fatigues or regalia; in fact, they are more frequently wearing business suits, hospital scrubs, law enforcement uniforms, or just everyday outfits like T-shirts and blue jeans. Yet, these heroes and sheroes in our midst are out and about in our communities advancing a commitment to service that is second-to-none,” said Adams.
“I would like to wish my constituents, my city, and my nation a very Happy Veteran’s Day. As we spend this day at home with our families, let us remember all of the men and women deployed overseas who do not have that same luxury. We should do this not as a tacit approval of war and violence, but to pay homage to those who answered their country’s call to service; many of whom still feel dishonored by the treatment they receive when they come back home. As we celebrate today, we should not forget that Veteran’s Day takes its origin from Armistice Day, marking the end of World War I. In other words, Veteran’s Day was born from a celebration of peace. May we always work toward achieving that peace, both at home and abroad,” said Williams.
“I wanted to take time today to say thank you today to everyone who has served our country with honor. Your bravery and sacrifice is beyond measure and I salute you today and every day,” said Bichotte.
