Just as voters get ready to choose between Mayor Bill de Blasio and Nicole Malliotakis to lead the nation’s largest city, former Mayor Michael Bloomberg came out of political hibernation yesterday to endorse City Councilman Chaim Deutsch (D-Sheepshead Bay, Manhattan Beach, Brighton Beach, Homecrest) for re-election.
“Chaim Deutsch has always been an incredibly hard worker with his public safety background and years of experience. Residents of the 48th council district are fortunate to have him as an advocate. I’m happy to endorse Chaim for re-election, and I wish him all the best in his second term,” said Bloomberg in a statement.
The Bloomberg endorsement, the only one the billionaire former mayor made in the citywide Brooklyn elections this year, is also another blow to political upstart Steve Saperstein, who is challenging Deusch. Both Saperstein and Bloomberg are Republicans. Additionally, on Saperstein’s campaign website it notes that during Bloomberg’s administration, he worked to minimize the impact of location shooting on local neighborhoods, residents and small businesses, at the Mayor’s Office of Film, Theatre & Broadcasting.
Deutsch said he got to know the three-term Bloomberg while he was the mayor, and he [Deutsch] worked for former City Councilman Michael Nelson.
“Mayor Bloomberg was a champion for New Yorkers during his time in City Hall. Working under my predecessor, I saw firsthand how Mayor Bloomberg was truly devoted to making New York City a safe, affordable, and prosperous place to live. I’m honored to have his support as I look towards my second term in office,” said Deutsch.
Other political endorsements that Deutsch has landed include Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams; Assemblymembers Dov Hikind, Bill Colton, Helene Weinstein, and Steven Cymbrowtiz; and State Sen. Diane Savino.
