Former Borough President Marty Markowitz split with the person who succeeded him in office, current Borough President Eric Adams today as the contentious Kings County District Attorney race kicks into a gallop in its final three weeks before the Sept. 12 Democratic Primary.
Markowitz announced today he’s backing Acting DA Eric Gonzalez, while Adams has let it be known for some time he’s backing former assistant district attorney Ama Dwimoh.
“Eric Gonzalez has demonstrated his commitment to justice and I am confident Brooklynites will be served superbly by his continued service as our Brooklyn District Attorney,” said Markowitz, who served as borough president from 2002-2013.
Prior to serving as brough president, Markowitz served for 22 years in the state senate covering Flatbush and central Brooklyn, where ironically, Adams succeeded him in that district as well before becoming borough president.
“I am so honored to receive the endorsement of Marty Markowitz,” said Gonzalez. “Like Marty, I was born and raised in Brooklyn. I grew up at a time when Brooklyn was not as safe as it is now, so I welcome the challenge of making my borough even safer than it is today. I am a cheerleader for Brooklyn just like Marty. His energy is infectious and I am grateful for his counsel.”
While Adams didn’t make a big rollout of it, he has long endorsed former assistant district attorney Ama Dwimoh, who also served as a counsel with his administration.
“I’m with Ama because Brooklyn needs a tough prosecutor who will protect Brooklynites while advocating for victims and those mistreated by the criminal justice system,” said Adams.
Dwimoh said she was honored to get Adams’ nod, and called him a true leader on criminal justice and social justice issues, and the strongest advocate Brooklyn could have.
“As a former NYPD captain, he [Adams] also knows what it takes to keep communities safe and the importance of justice for all,” said Dwimoh.
Others in the race include Anne Swern, Marc Fliedner and Patricia Gatling.
