BK Lawmakers React To Shooting of Bronx Police Officer

Brooklyn Federal and Local Lawmakers sent out their condolences in the wake of the shooting of Officer Miosotis Familia of the New York Police Department (NYPD) yesterday.

Familia died Wednesday morning after being shot in the head by Alexander Bonds who fired a revolver into a parked police vehicle in the Bronx. Familia was pronounced dead three hours later at St. Barnabas Hospital. Bonds was fatally shot by police a short time later after he drew his gun again. Bonds was paroled four years ago after serving seven years in state prison.

“Brooklyn mourns NYPD Officer Miosotis Familia. It’s a tragedy for our entire city when our symbol of public safety is assassinated. The bullet has pierced a hole through our entire city,” said Brooklyn Borough President Eric L Adams.

“I am sickened and outraged that another brave police officer, Miosotis Familia was executed in cold blood on the streets of New York City. There is a war being waged against our police department and we must do everything in our power to protect our officers to prevent another tragedy. The city needs to take decisive and swift action to ensure that our officers are safe either while on foot patrol or sitting in their vehicles. My deepest prayers and condolences go out to the Familia family,” said Senator Martin J. Golden (R-Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights, Marine Park, Gerritsen Beach)

State Sen. Jesse Hamilton
City Councilmember Jumaane Williams

“Last night, three children lost their mother. Eight siblings lost their sister. The 35,000 men and women of the NYPD lost a sister in blue. And our City lost a police officer who dedicated her career to our safety.

“In honoring the life of Police Officer Miosotis Familia, remember her bravery and her 12-year service to her fellow New Yorkers. Remember that no one should ever have to endure the agony her family and friends now face. Let us unite to console the grieving and send our thoughts and prayers to Officer Familia’s loved ones. Let us also resolve that our bonds as New Yorkers and our common humanity will continue to remain stronger than any who would seek to tear us apart,” said Senator Jesse Hamilton (D-Central Brooklyn)

“Police officers put their lives on the line everyday while working to ensure public safety. Regardless of the national discourse taking place around police-community relations, we must remember there are countless honest, well-intentioned police officers who wake up every day intending to do the best job they can for the people they have taken an oath to protect. Officer Familia woke up and got ready for work as she has done for years. It is with tremendous sadness that she will not be returning home,” said City Council Member Jumaane Williams (D-Flatbush, East Flatbush, Midwood)

City Councilman Vincent Gentile

Once again, this city sees the senseless assassination of one of New York’s Finest, Police Officer Miosotis Familia. My condolences go out to her family, her friends, and to her colleagues. This senseless killing of a NYC police officer underscores the danger police face every day and is again a clarion call to do more to get guns off our streets and a call to conduct tougher prosecutions against these miscreants,” said City Council Member Vincent Gentile (D-Bay Ridge, Bensonhurst, Dyker Heights, Bath Beach).

Greenfield to Hold Rally In Support of NYPD

City Councilman David Greenfield

City Council Member David Greenfield (D-Borough Park, Midwood, Bensonhurst) alongside Community Board 12 District Manager Barry Spitzer will hold a rally in support of the New York Police Department at Brooklyn’s 66th Precinct.

On Wednesday morning NYPD Officer Miosotis Familia of the 46th Precinct was fatally shot by ex-convict Alexander Bonds after he opened fire with a revolver into her parked police car in the Bronx.

Familia is the seventh police officer to die this year out of a total of 67 police officers across the nation. Officer deaths have increased by 18 percent by this time last year.

“An attack on a NPYD officer is an attack on this entire city. “We need to be clear that this is outrageous and that we admire, respect and love law enforcement in New York City,” said Greenfield.

The event is slated for 10:30 a.m. today, July 6, at the 66th Precinct, 5822 16th Avenue in Borough Park.

Squadron Announces Passage of Flex Work Arrangements Bill

Sen. Daniel Squadron

State Senator Daniel Squadron (D-Northern Brooklyn, Lower Manhattan) announced the passage of his legislation (S5811/A7634) that pushes forward flexible work arrangements.

The legislation, which passed the Senate and Assembly with bipartisan support, requires the President of the Civil Service Commission to prepare a biennial report on best practices for flexible work arrangements as well as ways for agencies to implement new and improved flexible work programs.

The analysis would be conducted in coordination with the New York State Office of Information Technology Services (NYSOITS) and would provide a snapshot of the current state of alternative work schedules within state agencies to highlight ways to expand them.

Flexible work schedules aim to increase work-life balance, provide personal and family-related flexibility, and help reduce rush-hour commuting congestion. The bill will now be sent to Governor Andrew Cuomo for approval.

“As the working world changes, flexible working arrangements have the ability to improve both quality of life and productivity. This bill is a part of ensuring the state’s workforce policies are supporting modern workers, and creating employment policies that best match staff schedules with agency needs,” said Squadron.
