On a recent professorial Spring Break trip to a five-acre retreat in the Bahamas, amid meditation and chanting on a pristine turquoise coastline, I kept hearing the name Claire Noelle Frost. A life coach based in Brooklyn, Ms. Frost kept popping up in conversations among New Agers while I milled around the beach and its simple huts.

Bliss Coaching, her company founded in 2008, has its seekers here, too, gathering to experience her spirit.  On any given day, she can be found reading a dog-eared copy of “Sacred Journey of the Peaceful Warrior” by Dan Millman to a client or into deep conversation with listeners seeking self-knowledge and self-improvement in the lush Prospect Park where cultural rebels play circus rules football.

Ms. Frost is a protégé of Dr. Martha Beck, the Harvard PhD and Oprah Magazine columnist who had built a lucrative business as a life coach. All that said, Ms. Frost’s karmic sessions were free. Perched on a cushion lotus-style atop white sand, the never-seeming-to-tire Brooklynite was dressed in flowing aqua garments guiding young and old ashramgoers away from self-sabotaging beliefs.

Furthermore, I enjoyed her patient listening skills and wisdom. When I explained my impending reunion with an estranged immediate family member and how I still held critical feelings toward this relative, she told me to only move forward if the reunion felt “yes” to me. Her incalculable thoughtfulness encouraged me to allow myself to feel, to get away from anything that made me feel anxious, and to come back restored.

And as I watched her work with others who seemed overcome with emotion and joy during their sessions, I remembered that all of this had been done for free. I broke down in tears. Blessed with the freedom to be of service, she had chosen the road not taken à la another Frost. Her encouraging me to take some deep breaths and just look for peace will live inside of me for as long as I live. “Day at a time — hour at a time,” she said. And she was right, even in the next minutes and hours of this day, we must love all with all of our heart now. Because as for our remaining days on the planet, you (nor I) have a clue.

In a morally volatile city like N. Y. where it’s hard to stay away from extremes, I intend to continue to travel with Ms. Frost when she returns to the Caribbean and enjoy another session. I cannot wait to have her look me in the eyes and offer to give me comfort. This life coaching experience was the best safe space…period.
