Bichotte: Veterans Deserve Our Gratitude And Support

Assembly Member Rodneyse Bichotte

Assemblywoman Rodneyse Bichotte (Flatbush, Ditmas Park) today reminded constituents That today is Veterans Day and it is a time to recognize these heroes for their service to our country and renew our commitment to getting them the support they deserve.

Bichotte noted that the state is home to nearly 900,000 veterans, and it has a  moral responsibility to care for service members who have returned home. Unfortunately, statistics show that about half of all post-9/11 service members will face some period of unemployment upon their return, and veterans make up 12 percent of the adult homeless population in our country, including a growing number of women with children, she said.

“Though we should always remember to thank our veterans, November 11 serves as a yearly reminder to reflect on their sacrifices. There are many memorials and parades taking place both nationally and locally to honor our heroes. I encourage you to contact your local AMVETS, Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), American Legion or Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) chapters for more information about what you can do to honor our local veterans and where to find other Veterans Day celebrations,” said Bichotte.

To learn more about veterans’ benefits contact the state’s Division of Veterans Affairs at 888-838-7697 or visit www.veterans.ny.gov. Bichotte can be reached on veteran or any other issue at  718-940-0428 or via email at bichotter@nyassembly.gov.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo
Gov. Andrew Cuomo

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo yesterday announced more than $325 million in funding is available to help elderly and low- and moderate-income New Yorkers heat their homes this winter.

Applications for the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) will be accepted beginning Monday, November 14.

“No one should have to choose between putting food on the table and paying their heating bill,” Cuomo said. “This critical program helps seniors and hard-working New Yorkers cover the high cost of heat during the cold winter months. I encourage those who are eligible to apply for this support and to stay warm and stay safe.”

Eligible households can receive a one-time benefit of up to $626, depending on income, household size and heating source. A family of four can have a household income of up to $53,076 annually, or $4,423 a month, and still qualify for help.

The program is overseen by the New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance, but applications are accepted at local departments of social services.

Wingate, Russotti, Shapiro & Halperin, LLP Obtain $12.085 Million Settlement (Sponsored)

Wingate, Russotti, Shapiro & Halperin attorney Kathleen Kettles recently obtained a court order approving the settlement of $12,085,000.

This is a case involving the failure to timely deliver an infant to a first-time mother and resulting in severe brain damage to the child who is now six-years-old.  This child cannot speak, walk or talk and must be tube fed. Her parents are completely devoted, but their day to day existence is filled with dealing doctor’s appointments, emergency visits, outside therapies and managing or providing her child’s need for extensive nursing services.

“I am truly in awe of this family and despite the heartache of having a child this disabled, it has been a joy to work for them. This settlement will lessen the burden on this incredible family,” said Kettles, who heads the firm’s Medical Malpractice team. Though a practicing attorney for almost 28 years, she was an RN for ten years prior to going to law school.

During the litigation, Kathy worked extensively with well known, respected experts in the fields of obstetrics, maternal fetal medicine, neonatology, pediatric neurology, pediatric neuroradiology and a life care planner to prepare the case for trial.  It is this attention to detail which results in an extremely favorable settlement for her clients.

“When I was a nurse, I often felt powerless to really help my patients, but as a nurse attorney, I get to help secure a child’s future and there is no greater feeling of satisfaction,” she said.
