Congressman Dan Donovan (Southern Brooklyn, Staten Island) today will unveil his legislative proposal to combat a national surge in overdose deaths caused by fentanyl, a synthetic opioid that is 50 times more powerful than heroin.

Drug traffickers mix fentanyl with heroin or counterfeit prescription painkillers and sell them to unsuspecting users, which has led to an increase in the number of fatal overdoses nationwide.

Donovan will be joined by Sarah Chamberlain, President of the Republican Main Street Partnership, whose membership has focused on policies to combat the substance abuse epidemic. The legislation comes after Donovan spent after months of meetings with federal law enforcement agencies,

The unveiling of the legislation is slated for 11 a.m., today in Donovan’s Staten Island District Office, 265 New Dorp Lane.

City Councilman Stephen Levin

City Council Member Stephen Levin, chair of the Committee of General Welfare, will hold a hearing on a package of bills requiring the collection of data regarding sexual orientation and gender identity.

The proposed measures would require the Department of Social Services, the Administration for Children’s Services, the Department of Homeless Services, the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, the Department for the Aging, the Department of Youth and Community Development, the Department of Education, and any other agencies designated by the Mayor to provide to all persons served by the agency with a demographic information survey that contains questions regarding sexual orientation and gender identity.

The bill would also require an annual review of all forms from the designated agencies, or any other agency designated by the Mayor, that collect demographic information, are completed by persons seeking services, and are within the administering agencies’ authority to amend. Wingate, Russotti, Shapiro & Halperin, LLP Obtain $1.85 Settlement

WRSH attorneys Bryce Moses and Joseph Stoduto obtained a settlement for $1,850,000 on behalf of a thirty-five year old grocery store cashier from Queens.

The woman was driving her vehicle in Brooklyn when another motorist struck the vehicle, resulting in a serious collision. As a result of the accident, our client suffered injuries to her neck requiring surgery.

During the course of the litigation, Stoduto won a decision from the Court that the defendants were 100% responsible for the collision, despite the defendants contention that they did nothing wrong. The defendants took the position that our client’s damages were minimal, and made a settlement offer of only $100,000 so Moses took the case to trial.

Shortly after the start of trial the defendants reconsidered their position and Bryce successfully negotiated a settlement in the amount of $1,850,000.
