Bay Ridge Female District Leader Race Heats Up

Bay Ridge, which is always a fun political neighborhood to cover, is expected to have another doozy when incumbent female 64th Assembly District Democratic Leader Joanne Seminara will take on Betty Ann Canizio, the current female 49th Assembly District Democratic Leader.

Canzio recently moved into the district, and sources say there is a good deal of animosity between the Canizio camp, which includes 64th AD male Democratic District Leader Kevin Peter Carroll, and the Seminara camp which includes Justin Brannan.

Both Carroll, who works for City Councilman Stephen Levin, and Canizio, who works for the City’s Board of Elections, owe their jobs in good measure to the Kings County Democratic Party patronage system. Then again, it could be argued that Brannan, who works for the City’s Department of Education at City Hall, is part of the rather extensive Bill de Blasio patronage system. Although to Brannan’s credit, he does know enough about the corridors of power to help the administration in an intergovernmental role. Seminara is a practicing attorney and long time Bay Ridge community activist.

The winner of the Seminara-Canizio contest in September will also go a long way towards the Democratic choice on who will succeed the term-limited City Council Member Vincent Gentile. Among the top names gunning for the position are both Brannan and Carroll.

Bed-Stuy Pols, James Endorse Wright

Tremaine Wright

Tremaine Wright

While, this little item was in the morning Lawmakers on the move yesterday, it deserves repeating, especially since KCP broke the original story.

Bed-Stuy lawmakers Assembly Member Annette M. Robinson, State Senator Velmanette Montgomery, and City Councilman Robert E. Cornegy, Jr. along with Public Advocate Letitia James and the Vanguard Independent Democratic Association (VIDA), will come out to publicly to endorse current Brooklyn Community Board #3 Chairperson Tremaine Wright for New York State Assembly Candidate (56thAD) on Saturday.

Robinson currently holds the seat and is retiring. Wright is expected to face a tough challenge from community activist Karen Cherry.

The endorsements are slated for 10 a.m., tomorrow, Saturday April 16 at Restoration Plaza, 1360 Fulton Street, West Plaza in Bedford-Stuyvesant.

Adams Opens Borough Hall To The Public

Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams tomorrow will open Brooklyn Borough Hall’s doors to the public for a first-of-its-kind open house.

The event will give Brooklynites an opportunity to meet with him, Deputy Brooklyn Borough President Diana Reyna, and members of his team, in addition to featuring guided tours of the historic building — built in 1848 to serve as the city hall for the then-City of Brooklyn — as well as exhibits on his office’s current initiatives and plans for the future.

Doors will open at 6 p.m., Borough Hall is located at 209 Joralemon Street in Downtown Brooklyn.

Have a great weekend all!
