NYS Presidential Primary: Daily Update

NYS Presidential Showdown April 19

Editor’s Note: As New York gears up towards the April 19th Presidential Primary, KCP will bring regular daily updates from both parties.

Democrats

Hillary Clinton will host a Women for Hillary town hall meeting in Brooklyn.

At the event, Clinton will discuss how, as President, she will continue her life long fight to break down barriers holding women and girls back so they can reach their God-given potential.

Clinton believes the issues that affect women’s lives – from equal pay to paid family leave to access to health care – are not just “women’s issues” but are family issues, economic issues, and are crucial to our future competitiveness.  Clinton has been a leader in supporting women’s rights including access to basic health care and reproductive choice. She will stand up to Republicans, like Donald Trump, and prevent them from defunding Planned Parenthood or taking us backward by restricting access to cancer screenings and affordable birth control.

Appearing with Clinton will be Flatbush Congresswoman Yvette Clarke and First Lady of New York City Chirlane McCray.

The event is slated for 3:45 p.m., tomorrow at the Medgar Evers Gymnasium, 1650 Bedford Avenue in Crown Heights. Doors open at 1: 30 p.m.

Debate Update

Bill de Blasio tweeted: @BilldeBlasio)
Let’s make @NY1 4/14 BKLYN debate happen. @BernieSanders: I’ll help you secure any permit you need to ensure your NYC rally can happen too.

Bernie Inspects Indian Point

After a scheduled inspection at Entergy Corporation’s Indian Point nuclear reactor found that more than 10 percent of bolts at the facility were faulty or degraded, U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders on Monday issued the following statement reiterating his position on nuclear power:

“I am very concerned that the Indian Power nuclear power reactor is more than ever before a catastrophe waiting to happen. Not only have recent inspections found that more than 10 percent of bolts at this plant are faulty and degraded, but radioactive leaks now contaminate the water supply as well. That is unacceptable. In my view, we cannot sit idly by and hope that the unthinkable will never happen. We must take action to shut this plant down in a safe and responsible way. It makes no sense to me to continue to operate a decaying nuclear reactor within 25 miles of New York City where nearly 10 million people live.

“Even in a perfect world where energy companies didn’t make mistakes, nuclear power is and always has been a dangerous idea because there is no good way to store nuclear waste.

“But the sad truth is we do not live in a perfect world, and energy companies like Entergy have already made serious mistakes. That is why the United States must lead the world in transforming our energy system away from nuclear power and fossil fuels and towards energy efficiency and renewable energies like wind, solar, geothermal and biomass which will provide safe and clean energy and create millions of good-paying jobs. Moreover, we need funding to transition energy workers into new industries and jobs. We cannot allow the ailing nuclear industry to endanger the lives of millions of people just to squeeze out every last cent from its failing infrastructure.”

Republicans

John Quaglione, the communications director for Bay Ridge State Senator Marty Golden, met Republican candidate John Kasich last week. Quaglione, a Republican is strongly rumored to throw his hat in the ring for term-limited City Councilman Vincent Gentile‘s seat next year.

The following is his report of meeting Kasich:

t was such an honor to have been invited to the MSNBC Town Hall with Ohio Governor, and Presidential Candidate, John Kasich. It was a unique opportunity to have a leading Republican contender for President visit one of the five boroughs and it was an honor for my wife Kerry and I to meet Governor Kasich.

As I mentioned previously in a Kings County Politics story, I am leaning toward voting for John Kasich in the April 19th primary. Throughout this campaign, Governor Kasich has been talking about the real issues that America is facing and that should be leading the topic of conversation.

John Kasich has a plan for the future of America that includes keeping us safe from the threat of terrorism and cyber attacks, supporting our veterans and creating job opportunities for those who have served, and helping those with mental illness and addiction.  Additionally, as a supporter of the March for Dimes, I commend his policy that is looking to target infant mortality and premature births, so that more babies are born healthy.

Governor Kasich has the experience, record and vision to create jobs and spur economic development, and renewal global alliance for our Nation.

Candidates Sen. Ted Cruz and Donald Trump were campaigning in Wisconsin.
