Robinson Steps Down, Endorses Wright

Longtime lawmaker Assemblywoman Annette Robinson (Bedford-Stuyvesant)  Saturday announced she is retiring from her seat and quickly endorsed and pledged her support for Community Board 3 Chair Tremaine Wright as her successor.

The announcement came over the weekend at the Vanguard Independent Democratic Association breakfast. VIDA also nominated its President Henry Butler to run as a Hillary Clinton delegate in the upcoming April 19 Democratic Primary.

Robinson’s retirement sets up an expected tough race for the 56th Assembly district seat between Wright and community activist Karen Cherry. Look for a KCP story on this development later today.


Adams Address Pakistani Terrorist Attack

Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams today will address members from the borough’s large Pakistani neighborhood along Coney Island Avenue to discuss plans for an interfaith response to yesterday’s deadly act of terrorism in the Pakistani city of Lahore, which killed dozens of people and injured hundreds more.

The victims were caught in an explosion, believed to be caused by a suicide bomber, in a crowded public park where many families were celebrating Easter. A faction of the Pakistani Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack, saying Christians were the target.

New York City and the surrounding region are home to the largest population of Pakistani-Americans in the United States, with one of the greatest concentrations residing along Coney Island Avenue in the neighborhoods of Flatbush, Kensington, and Midwood.

Adams will address the situation with local community situations at 1:30 p.m., today at the Makki Masjid Muslim Community Center, 1089 Coney Island Avenue in Flatbush.

Several hundred supporters of U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders showed up Saturday for a block party kickoff to his Brooklyn campaign office leading up to the April 19th New York State Presidential Primaries.

Prominent supporters who spoke included Ohio state senator Nina Turner, film actor Justin Bartha and Kyp Malone of TV the Radio discussed Sanders’ agenda.

The office is located at 131 8th Street in Park Slope.


 

Lander Adds Second Ballot Projects in Participatory Budgeting Process

City Council Member Brad Lander (Park Slope, Kensington, Windsor Terrace) last week added several “bricks and mortar” projects to 13 “capital Projects ballot” in this year’s participatory budgeting in his district.

Participatory budgeting allows constituents to vote on which capital projects they want to see funded in their district. In Lander’s district he has allocated $1.5 million of his capital budget for local projects. He now has allocated $50,000 for the projects that don’t meet “city capital ” funding – the only district in ths city council to do this.

The six projects include:

Translation Equipment for 5 Multi-Lingual Public Schools 

Allows interpreters to provide live translation during school events.  Non-English speaking audience members listen through headsets. Equipment accommodates up to 8 languages and 2,000 receivers.

Cost:  $25,000

Student Teams Lead School Diversity Programming

IntegrateNYC4me will assist 4 intentionally diverse schools in developing plans to foster inclusion and integration. Student-based teams will present ideas to school communities and partner schools.

Location: PS133, Bklyn New School, Bklyn Arts & Sci, PS372 aka Brooklyn Children’s School

Cost:  $11,000

EWaste Bicycle Pick-up to Gowanus Warehouse

A pilot program where unwanted electronic items will be picked up by cargo bicycle and brought to the Gowanus E-waste warehouse. The pilot will serve those within a one mile radius of the warehouse.

Location: LES Ecology Center’s Gowanus EWaste Warehouse

Cost: $19,000

Overnight Book Drops at Three Library Branches

Installation of overnight book drops at three district library branches to enable after-hours library returns. The drops will make utilizing the library easier and help people avoid fines.

Cost: $24,000 ($8,000/drop)

Location: Carroll Gardens, Windsor Terrace & Borough Park 

Music Equipment for Three Senior Centers

Music equipment for three district senior centers, including guitars and keyboards, to enhance current music programming and to facilitate new programs such as keyboard classes and karaoke.

Cost: $5,000

Location: Prospect Hill, Eileen Dugan, Park Slope Senior Ctrs

Tech Upgrade at Imani House Social Service Center

Upgrade Imani House’s old office tech—computers, printer, software, etc.—to help them aid education for youth, families, immigrants; help the jobless and homeless; and advocate for women’s rights.

Cost: $24,000
