Statement of Apology from Sam Irvin Maslow: Sam Maslow Will Not Challenge Helene Weinstein

On Tuesday, March 15, 2016, Kings County Politics, a political blog, published an article indicating that I was interested in running against Helene Weinstein, the Assemblymember for the 41st Assembly District. That is incorrect. I would like to clarify the facts. I currently serve in the capacity of Director of Communications for Assemblymember Rodneyse Bichotte of the 42nd Assembly District. I have served in that capacity for just about one month and I am grateful for having had the opportunity to serve on her staff.

When I was interviewed by the blog’s reporter, I attempted to convey my general interest in the field of politics and my desire to engage in public service. I do think that there is a role for millennials like myself to do so, and I have been honored to have the opportunity to engage in public service as an aide to Assemblymember Rodneyse Bichotte, who represents the 42nd Assembly District in Brooklyn. Ms. Bichotte has been an outstanding legislator and I am proud to have been able to assist her.

While the reporter asked me whether I ever intended to run for public office myself, I do want to make it clear that I have no intention of running now, in the near future or at any time against Assemblymember Helene Weinstein. I have the upmost respect for Assemblymember Helene Weinstein as she has done tremendous work on behalf of the 41st Assembly District. I do extend an apology to her and her staff for all this confusion.

In point of fact, my father, Aaron Maslow and Assemblymember Helene Weinstein go way back to the late 1970s, when initially her father Murray Weinstein was elected Assemblymember and, then, when she herself ran and was elected two years later.  Later on, during her tenure as Chair of the Assembly Election Law Committee, my father worked with Assemblymember Weinstein on pending election law legislation. As chair of the Assembly Judiciary Committee, she has served with distinction.

Again, I extend my most sincere apologies to Assemblymember Helene Weinstein and her staff.

The article also implied that Assemblymember Rodneyse Bichotte, Josue “Josh” Pierre, and my father, Aaron Maslow, may have been aware, and were supportive of the idea that I would challenge Assemblymember Weinstein for her seat. However, none of them were aware at any point in time and have made it clear that they would not have supported such an idea. Apologies are owed to the three of them as well for creating this confusion.

Sincerely,

Sam Irvin Maslow
