The offices of both Borough Park Assemblyman Dov Hikind and Borough Park/Midwood City Councilman David Greenfield refused comment on accomplished Republican Phil Rosenthal’s challenge to longtime incumbent RepJerrold Nadler this year for Congress after Nadler signed off on the Iran deal last year.

Although longtime adversaries in the world of Orthodox Jewish politics, Greenfield and Hikind joined forces last year to loudly decry Nadler’s decision to back the deal, which both thought was a betrayal of Israel. At the time, both also vowed to remember Nadler’s decision at election time.

Several Orthodox Jewish sources say despite the anger from Brooklyn’s highly religious population over Nadler’s decision there is the feeling that the 12-term Nadler is too powerful to be challenged. Other sources in the community, however, think that strong support for Rosenthal from the Brooklyn side of the 10th Congressional District will at least send the message that Nadler shouldn’t take the borough’s support for granted.

Among the neighborhoods of Brooklyn that Nadler represents include Borough Park and Kensington, and parts of Bay Ridge, Bensonhurst, Dyker Heights, Red Hook, Sunset Park and Midwood.

Flatbush City Council Member Dr. Mathieu Eugene, a long-time advocate for health, presented King’s County Hospital with a check today for just under $5 million.

“On behalf of the New York City Council and the residents of Brooklyn, I’m proud to present a check of $4,912,000 to King’s County Hospital. All New Yorkers deserve quality care and I’m pleased to be your advocate for health,” said Eugene. “It is our moral obligation to make sure that our men, women, children, and senior citizens receive the care they are entitled to, and I will continue to support important health initiatives.”

Eugene has long been an advocate for healthcare in the borough and has previously allocated funding for a variety of health projects.

In December, Council Member Eugene celebrated the ribbon-cutting ceremony at King’s County Hospital for the new Linear Accelerator (LINAC), a state-of-the-art machine that provides radiation therapy for cancer patients by destroying cancerous cells while leaving healthy tissue intact. He has also allocated funds to support SUNY Downstate Medical Center’s Advanced Biotechnology Incubator and recently celebrated its completion, which helps guarantee that Brooklyn will be a leader in the bio-tech industry.

Capano Looks At Gentile’s Seat

Bay Ridge Republican Robert Capano said he is seriously eyeing City Council Member Vincent Gentile’s term-limited seat next year in what promises to be a wild scrum for the office.

Capano boasts bipartisan experience having worked for former Democratic Borough Presidents Howard Golden and Marty Markowitz, but leans on the Tea Party side of the GOP. He currently works for Republican Supermarket titan and possible mayoral candidate John Catsimatidis.

Also expected to run on the GOP side is Sen. Marty Golden’s Communications Director John Quaglione.

On the Democratic side among the names being floated are Justin Brannan, Kevin Peter Carroll, Chris McCreight and Assemblyman Peter Abbate.
