De Blasio Gets Ready For School Year

Mayor Bill de Blasio, yesterday, released a short video in honor of today being the first day of the school year for most of the public schools.

“We all have a part to play in getting our kids ready for success. Support from teachers, parents, counselors, and more can truly make a difference in a child’s education — and beyond,” said de Blasio.

“As Mayor, it’s my responsibility to help ensure our schools and teachers have all the tools, resources, and support they need to get off to a great start and excel throughout the year,” he added.

Sheepshead Bay Assemblyman Steven Cymbrowitz, Chairman of the Assembly’s Aging Committee, will preside over a roundtable discussion in Manhattan today entitled “Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities (NORCs): Preparing for the Future,” which will hear stakeholders’ perspective on how New York State can better assist NORC programs and support them while they work to help older New Yorkers stay in their communities.

The NORC program was first introduced two decades ago and has been successful in keeping older adults in their homes in the community. NORCs have grown to include Neighborhood NORCs and have expanded beyond New York City to other areas of New York State. Participants will include agencies, organizations that are involved with NORCs, and representatives of individual NORCs.

The roundtable will examine the current model for NORCs and discuss whether updates are necessary. The goal is to stimulate conversation and discussion of ideas in general, including the proposal set forth in A.7999, for how to keep NORCs a vital part of the continuum of community-based care.

The roundtable discussion is slated for 10 a.m., today, Sept. 9 at 250 Broadway, Conference Room 2225.
