Adams Calls For Coney Island Regulations
Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams yesterday called on more government intervention in controlling “the public performer issue” in Coney Island.
“This summer, the Riegelmann Boardwalk in Coney Island has become home to a new cast of characters, a host of costumed individuals that are haranguing beachgoers and visitors for photographs and payment. As has been the case in Times Square, where this behavior originated, a number of these characters have conducted themselves in an aggressive manner that runs directly counter to the family-friendly atmosphere we are working to maintain in ‘America’s Playground,’” said Adams.
“As such, I thank City Hall for convening a working group that will look into the public performer issue in Coney Island. We cannot abide by unregulated and unenforced activity that negatively impacts local small businesses and poses a threat to public safety. I look forward to working with Mayor de Blasio, Council Member Treyger, State Senator Savino, and all local stakeholders to make specific recommendations that enhance quality of life along the Boardwalk.”
Coney Island has long been known for its carnival atmosphere including its freak show, Mermaid Parade with scantily dressed women, and a host of boardwalk musicians and entertainers.
Colton Treyger, Tong Deliver Petitions Against Waste Transfer Station
Assemblyman William Colton, Councilman Mark Treyger, and District Leader Nancy Tong yesterday delivered thousands of signatures on petitions to Mayor de Blasio’s office decrying the continuing construction of the Southwest Brooklyn Waste Transfer Station.
The action follows a letter that Tong and fellow Democratic District Leader Charles J. Ragusa sent to the federal Environmental Protection Agency pointing out the violations of the special permit that the construction site has. These dangerous violations included lack of protective netting to help prevent debris and soil from discharging into the water, debris/soil that was left uncovered, and even a slick that entered the waters adjacent to the construction site.
The group of electeds are also continuing a neighborhood watch over the waste transfer station in which it is urging the community to look for signs of violations of the construction site and to report them.
Colton said any further photos or videos of violations of the construction site can be emailed to neighborhoodwatch47@gmail.com.

Clarke Celebrates Women’s Equality Day
Flatbush Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke yesterday released the following statement in honor of Women’s Equality Day, commemorating the 95th Anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment giving women the right to vote.
“The ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment was critical to the effort to secure for women the full blessings of American life. That effort continues today, as we work to eliminate the disparity in wages between men and women, establish paid family leave as a right guaranteed to every worker, and expand the participation of women in business and government,” said Clarke.
“We must also remember that for millions of American women the right to vote remains under attack by state legislatures that have enacted voter identification laws, restricted early voting, and removed the names of eligible voters from registration lists – entirely for the purpose of disenfranchising African American and Latino women. As we celebrate Women’s Equality Day and the Nineteenth Amendment, let us resolve to pursue full equality for every American, particularly those women who are still denied the right to participate in our civil society.”
