Public Advocate Letitia James told supporters in an email letter today that she’s endorsing Hillary Clinton for president and urged “progressives everywhere” to jump on board – perhaps taking a little dig at progressive Mayor Bill de Blasio.
Thus far, de Blasio has refused to endorse Clinton, for whose previous senate campaign he helped manage, until her “progressive” positions concerning income equality are further vetted.
But James, a former Brooklyn City Council member, has no such problem.
“Like millions of New Yorkers, I feel a sense of urgency about the challenges we face as a nation. Rising inequality, underfunded schools, lack of opportunity, and a sense that the playing field is tilted in favor of the wealthy and well-connected,” James wrote.
I am proud to endorse Hillary for President and urge progressives everywhere to join us in supporting Hillary in 2016, she added.
The email was sent through the Letitia James 2017 campaign, and not through James’ public advocate’s office in keep with regulations not to utilize an official government office towards political campaigns. While the Letitia James 2017 campaign is geared towards a re-election to public advocate, some or all of it could also be utilized for a possible mayoral run.
A James source refused to speculate on anything other than James’ support of Clinton.
“The email speaks for itself,” the source said.
