Levin Stands Up For City Park
City Councilman Stephen Levin is drawing a line in the sand to stop a developers from building housing on an 11-acre parcel along the Williamsburg waterfront that the city promised to turn into a park, Crains Reports.
The site currently houses a warehouse owned and occupied by a file-storage business called CitiStorage that partially burned down last month. The site is adjacent to Bushwick Inlet Park, which was created when Williamsburg was rezoned in 2005 to make for more green space to offset the high-rises permitted along the water as a result of the zoning changes. .
“The city can’t afford not to do this,” Levin told the media outlet. “This speaks to the credibility of our local government and my credibility as a City Council member whether we can do the things we say we’re going to do.”
The publication reports that several major developers are eyeing the parcel amid rumors that Mayor Bill de Blasio’s administration would endorse a rezoning of the site to allow for residential development, including affordable housing.
But Levin said he would not endorse a development deal because it would mean the public would get a smaller park than originally promised.
Levin plans to hold a rally on the issues tomorrow on the steps of City Hall.
Bklyn Pols Hear About Industry City in Sunset Park
Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, State Sen. Marty Golden, City Councilman Carlos Menchaca, and representatives from the offices of Assemblyman Felix Ortiz, Rep. Nydia Velazquez and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand were on hand yesterday to hear Industry City CEO Andrew Kimball unveil plans for the 32-acre waterfront site in Sunset Park, Crains Reported.
Kimball called for a new zoning from the city to include allowance of a proposed parking lot and hotel complex, and $115 million in taxpayer-funded infrastructure improvements to help foster $1 billion in private investment.
The project unveiling comes as Menchaca, who represents the area, and Mayor Bill de Blasio are at odds on how to develop the site. The rezoning would be subject to ULURP, a seven-month public-review process that includes the local community board and borough president’s opinion before the city council and mayor’s office signs off on any plan.
