Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams decision to do holiday shopping in Brownsville Saturday drew major support from Mayor de Blasio on down about the importance of shopping locally.

Adams made the excursion to MGB Pops!, a pop-up market in Brownsville to highlight Small Business Saturday , a 2010 initiative encouraging shoppers to patronize small, local brick-and-mortar businesses.

The city’s Economic Development Corporation and Community Solutions, together with the Ocean Hill-Brownsville Neighborhood Improvement Association opened the pop up marketplace through Dec. 28.

“When Brooklynites and New Yorkers shop local at small businesses, they’re investing in their neighbors,” said Mayor de Blasio. “Those dollars spent on streets like 7th Avenue and Franklin Street buy more than special gifts – they lift up working families at a time of year when so many struggle to make ends meet. I commend Borough President Adams for encouraging Brooklynites to come out for Small Business Saturday.”

“Small businesses are at the heart and soul of what makes Brooklyn tick,” said Congressman Hakeem Jeffries. “I join our Borough President in his important effort to make sure we all support our local merchants on Small BusinessSaturday, and continue to shop in community stores throughout the year.”

“Small Business Saturday provides an opportunity for holiday shoppers to support our neighborhood entrepreneurs,” said State Senator-elect Jesse Hamilton. “I celebrate the work of MGB Pops! and its partners in highlighting Brownsville’s innovative artisans and vendors. These are the businesses that will buy a page in the school yearbook, sponsor a church choir, or participate in a community clean-up event. These businesses engage with the community. As a community, we need to return the favor.”

“Historically known to be a shopping destination, Brownsville welcomed people from all over to shop along Pitkin and Belmont Avenues,” said Assembly Member-elect Latrice Walker. “On this Small Business Saturday, I am happy to see MGB Pops! here on Mother Gaston and proud to walk the corridor with our Borough President, supporting new business initiatives in the community.”
