Brooklyn Nabes Get Homeless Shelters
Sheepshead Bay and East Flatbush City Councilmembers Chaim Deutsch and Jumaane Williams responded to their districts getting newly opened homeless shelters in their district, the Daily News reports.
“I had heard rumors and I was told it wasn’t set in stone,” Deutsch told the paper. “Next thing I know, they’re moving in furniture.”
The facility, which currently houses 21 families, is located on Emmons Avenue and opened two months ago. Deutsch said the figure is expected to climb to 69 families.
Williams saw while he didn’t want to make people feel unwelcome, the Glenwood Road shelter was too big and out of context with the many one- and two-family homes in the neighborhood. The East Flatbush shelter has 198 units housing between 700 and 800 people.
Gentile Cuts Ribbon on Dyker Heights Dog Run
City Councilman Vincent Gentile and Assemblyman Alec Brook-Krasny were on hand to cut the ribbon for a new dog run in Dyker Heights, the Home Reporter reported.
The $600,000 dog run that Gentile secured with city funds is located at Dyker Beach at 86th Street and Seventh Avenue and includes new benches and fences, a separate run for smaller dogs and two doggie drinking fountains.
“It is often said that the greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated,” said Gentile told the media outlet. “Before us today, we can see the greatness of a neighborhood and just how much we care about our four-legged friends.”
Adams Does Christmas Shopping in Brownsville
Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams was in Brownsville this weekend to do holiday shopping at MGB Pops!, a pop-up market featuring food and retail from local entrepreneurs.
The marketplace was opened on Friday, October 17th by the New York City Economic Development Corporation and Community Solutions, in concert with the Ocean Hill-Brownsville Neighborhood Improvement Association and will close for the winter on Sunday, December 28th.
Adams did the shopping to promote year-round patronage of Brooklyn’s small businesses, particularly in under-the-radar shopping destinations like Brownsville.
