20141113_184445Throngs of people wrapped around the Seventh Day Adventist Church, 88 Hanson Place, last night for the first of four informational workshops on how to get in one of the affordable housing units of several mixed-income high rises either newly built or under construction in Downtown Brooklyn.

The non-profit Fifth Avenue Committee (FAC) held the two-hour long session, which explained the guidelines and instructions on how to fill out applications online as well as other factors including credit score, rental history and a background check. FAC’s primary mission is in developing and managing affordable housing and other community facilities along with combating displacement caused by gentrification.

Fort Greene City Councilwoman Laurie Cuombo was on hand to give opening remarks and thanks to all who attended while explaining the need for affordable housing.

Housing Development Associate Denita Edwards followed the remarks with an in-depth presentation about how to go navigate the process of being picked for an apartment in one of the buildings. She explained that over 1,000 units will be available with residents of Community Board 2 being given priority for 50% of the affordable units.

To become eligible for one of the affordable units in Downtown Brooklyn attendance at one of the four workshops is required. The next one is slated for 6:30 pm, Feb. 4 at Pratt Institute, 200 Willoughby Avenue.
