All is good for two southwest Brooklyn incumbent lawmakers – both of which got re-elected, the Home Reporter and Brooklyn Spectator reported.
GOP Assemblymember Nicole Malliotakis, who represents portions of Staten Island and Bay Ridge, easily bested her Democratic opponent, Marybeth Melendez, with 73 percent (14,339 votes) to Melendez’s 27 percent (5,213 votes). This includes Malliotakis winning the Brooklyn portion of the district for the first time with 57 percent of the vote.
Malliotakis told the Home Reporter that her priorities include restoring bus lines that had been curtailed by the MTA, mitigating “the unreasonable toll burden on the Verrazano Bridge,” and championing an increased college TAP assistance to “help middle class families pay for higher education.”
Meanwhile, Democratic Assemblymember Alec Brook-Krasny, whose district includes portions of Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights, Brighton Beach, Coney Island and Seagate, more narrowly bested his GOP opponent Stamatis Lilikakis with 58 percent (8,512 votes) to Lilikakis 42 percent (6,089 votes).
Brook-Krasny told the Home Reporter one of his main priorities is the issue of illegal home conversions which have been plaguing the Bay Ridge/Dyker Heights portion of the district lately.
Among the fixes he mentioned was introducing legislation that would increase the onus on architects who are self-certifying their plans as well as to work with the city to increase compliance with the city’s regulations.
