Doug Wirth has served as president and CEO of Amida Care since 2006. Under his tenure, Amida Care’s successful care model has empowered thousands of New Yorkers living with HIV to take control of their health and get about the business of living their lives. Amida Care is the largest Medicaid Special Needs Health Plan in New York with more than 8,500 members, including people living with HIV/AIDS and populations at higher risk for acquiring HIV (people of transgender experience, who represent over 20 percent of Amida Care’s membership, and people experiencing homelessness).

What is the most rewarding part of your job?
Having lived through decades of the HIV epidemic and been on the frontlines of fighting homelessness, it’s fulfilling to serve as President/CEO of Amida Care and advance access to lifesaving health care for people placed at risk for poor health outcomes.

What is your favorite form of exercise?
Working in HIV and homelessness taught me the critical importance of taking care of your body. In my 20s/30s, lifting weights and dancing were my favorite ways to sweat off the calories. Now, I enjoy lower impact Grit or CrossFit classes for workouts!

Do you have a favorite healthy meal?
My favorite healthy meal is a kale/arugula salad, with fresh veggies and 4 oz. of protein like salmon, chicken or an occasional skirt steak delight.
