More than 50 people showed up to a ‘Get Out The Vote’ rally at the Flatbush junction near Brooklyn College last night to show support for the Democratic Party and more importantly for Presidential Candidate Hillary Clinton.
Cory Provost, the 58th Democratic District Leader, introduced incumbent Congresswoman Yvette Clarke (Crown Heights, Flatbush, Sheepshead Bay), who urged the crowd on the importance of casting their vote tomorrow.
“Tomorrow we will turn the page on the Donald Trump Reality Show. It’s going to be cancelled as of tomorrow and we’ve got to make sure we cancel it,”. Clarke said. “We’ve got to send a message out…that this nation still believes that it is people power that makes the United States so great.”
This year’s contentious U.S. presidential race between Donald Trump and Clinton has been been marked by controversy after controversy, mostly on Trump’s side. From the beginning the real estate tycoon was never expected to emerge the Republican nominee out of a field of 16 seasoned politicos. The father of four then went on to espouse hate speech toward minority groups, particularly immigrants and Latinos, announcing a plan to build a wall between the U.S. and Mexico border.
To finish off his campaign, Trump was recorded during a hot mic incident claiming to grope and kiss women without their permission. The whole campaign has left a sour taste in the mouths of many Republicans including current House Speaker, Paul Ryan, who refused to support the 70-year-old candidate.
Currently the candidates are only separated by a small margin according to the most recent polls. The candidates are going to be looking for big wins in the swing states of Florida, Pennsylvania, North Carolina and of course Virginia which each have 29, 20, 15 and 13 electoral college votes, respectively. These votes could go a long way in clinching the victory for either candidate on election night.
”When we put Hillary Clinton in the White House, we will all be proud,” said Senator Roxanne Persaud (Canarsie, Mill Basin, Brownsville, East New York, Sheepshead Bay), energizing the crowd by reminding them that it’s not just about Clinton but making sure the Democrats gain control of the House and Senate so some real progress can be made in Washington. “And once you’re done voting for Clinton, remember to go down the ballot, we have to get the Democrats in power.”
Sisters Jean Ellis and Elsa Kum were at the rally in support of Mrs. Clinton who they believe is the best person for the job. Kum traveled all the way back from D.C. where she currently lives to Brooklyn just to ensure she did her part in getting Clinton into the White House. “I just came in from Washington, D.C. and I came off the train, put my bags down and came right here. I’m supporting her [Clinton] because I think she’s the best person for the Presidency, she has been a State Senator and she did a great job and I want to make sure what President Obama put in place remains in place.”
If the former Secretary of State were to win the election she would be the first woman elected to the Office of The President as well as the first woman to be First Lady and then Commander-In-Chief. Clinton has over 30 years of experience in various elected positions and was Secretary of State for four of the years under President Obama.
The only win so far has been for Clinton who has won the small village of Dixville Notch, New Hampshire which has a tradition of midnight voting. If this is any sign of the polling results to come then Hillary is already one step closer to making history.
