Deutsch Announces Summer Repaving Schedule
City Council member Chaim Deutsch (D- Midwood, Sheepshead Bay, Manhattan Beach, Brighton Beach, and parts of Coney Island) announced upcoming street repaving dates for the 48th Council District last week.
The Department of Transportation (DOT) is expected to conduct street milling and paving operations throughout the summer months in a way that minimizes the traffic impact.
Smooth streets are safer for drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians, and Deutsch has made it a priority to increase the amount of streets resurfaced each year. Deutsch has also allocated nearly $4 million dollars during the last several years towards milling and paving some of the most neglected roads throughout the district.
“Many of the streets being resurfaced this summer were added to the schedule when local residents reached out to me to report their disrepair. I thank NYC DOT Commissioner Polly Trottenberg, Brooklyn DOT Commissioner Keith Bray, and City Council Speaker Corey Johnson for their advocacy in ensuring that Transportation-related issues in my district and throughout the City are addressed effectively,” said Deutsch.

Golden, Felder Launch #Stop4Students Safety Campaign
State Senators Marty Golden (R-Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights, Bensonhurst, Marine Park, Gerritsen Beach, Gravesend) and Simcha Felder (D-Boro Park, Flatbush, Kensington, Bensonhurst) alongside Senator Andrew J. Lanza (R-Staten Island) launched the #Stop4Students campaign on Saturday, aimed at protecting school children from speeding drivers.
The campaign includes comprehensive legislation to protect over 1.1 million students as they walk near their schools, enhancing safety 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The bill, S9123, would require the City’s Department of Transportation to install stop signs and red lights at the intersections of over 1,000 school zones, extending life-saving protections to every schoolchild, at all hours of the day. New York City’s current speed camera program only covers 140 school zones during school hours.
Speed cameras would remain in effect for six months, under the new measure, and revenues collected by the city from summonses would be dedicated to installing stop signs and red lights at every single school intersection. These violations are given to the owner of a car and not necessarily the person speeding behind the wheel since photo enforcement captures license plates to issue tickets.
The major proposal keeps the goals and spirit of New York City’s Vision Zero Plan to significantly drive down vehicle-related injuries and fatalities across the city by adopting measures that modify motorists’ behavior.
“No school child should ever have to fear danger while walking to school. Over the years, many legislators have tried to solve this problem, but their solutions are limited to a small number of schools, protecting a fraction of students. This new initiative will actually slow cars down and protect all New York City school children,” said Golden.
“This common sense legislation, which I sponsor, will protect all of our children from speeding cars and reckless drivers. These lifesaving measures will ensure that kids feel safe and stay safe getting to and from school,” said Felder.
Parker, Williams To Host Job Fair
State Senator Kevin Parker (D-Flatbush, East Flatbush, Midwood, Ditmas Park, Kensington, Windsor Terrace, and Park Slope) and City Council member Jumaane Wiliams (D-Flatbush, East Flatbush, Midwood) will host the 11th Annual Job Fair at Brooklyn College this week.
The event will give local members of the community a chance to meet with public and private employers in a variety of fields, including green jobs- as well as to attend career workshops on job readiness, resume building, interview training, and more.
The event is slated for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Tuesday, June 26, at Brooklyn College – Student Union, at 2900 Bedford Avenue in Flatbush.
Golden Blasts Board of Parole For Release of Another Cop-Killer
State Senator Martin J. Golden (R-Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights, Bensonhurst, Marine Park, Gerritsen Beach, Gravesend), a former New York City Police Officer, blasted the New York State Board of Parole’s recent decision to release cop-killer Robert Hayes last week.
Hayes, a member of the Black Liberation Army murdered Transit Patrolman Sidney Thompson in a subway shootout in 1974. Hayes later fired a sawed-off shotgun at five cops while they were arresting him. Transit Patrolman Sidney Hayes was a father of two, at the time of his death. For the murder, Hayes was sentenced to 35 years to life. The sentence was given before life without parole for cop-killers was enacted into law. According to the New York Post, Hayes has only a couple years left to live due to his diabetes and congestive heart disease.
As a result of the decision to release now 69 year-old Hayes, Golden is calling for Chairperson of the State Board of Parole Tina Stanford, and all the other commissioners to immediately resign. Hayes’ release comes just months after the release of convicted cop killer Herman Bell and John Ruzaz in May.
“The Board of Parole has added another member to Governor Cuomo’s New Constituency. A constituency of cop-killers, murders, rapists, and other violent, unrepentant psychopathic criminals. Since, late 2017, there has been a change at the Parole Board. It is a change where the Board of Parole closes its ears, eyes and hearts to the wishes of victims’ families, police organizations and other citizens,” said Golden.
“The release of unrepentant cop-killers must stop. This is wrong and everybody knows it. To let cop-killer after cop-killer return to our streets is insanity. It seems the only way to stop insane decisions is to remove the insane commissioners,” added Golden.
