Golden Offers Rent Freeze Initiative To Seniors
State Senator Martin J. Golden (R-C-I, Brooklyn) announced that his office has officially launched, in partnership with Mayor Bill de Blasio‘s Public Engagement Unit, the New York City Rent Freeze Initiative.
Golden will kicked off office hours yesterday to offer assistance to his constituents who are senior citizens, in signing up for the initiative.
The City has been launching new efforts to inform persons at least 62 years or older about the program that will keep a tenant’s rent from increasing if they have a household income of $50,000 or less, live in a rent regulated apartment, and spend more than one third of their income on rent.
“I am proud to partner with the Mayor’s Public Engagement Unit to bring awareness, and get seniors signed up, for the Rent Freeze Initiative. The rising costs of rent threatens the ability of the New Yorkers who have contributed so much to this City to stay in their own homes. I believe this program will offer the help many need and deserve to reduce some of their living expenses. I encourage residents to schedule an appointment, to review the process and apply,” said Golden.
Public Engagement Unit staff will be available at Senator Golden’s Office from 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m. every other Tuesday, starting May 9, with the next dates scheduled for Tuesday, May 23 and Tuesday, June 6 at 7408 5th Avenue (1st Floor) in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn To make an appointment, contact Senator Golden’s office at (718) 238-6044.

Espinal Introduces Bill To Increase Safety At NYC Baseball Stadiums
Council Member Rafael Espinal (D-Cypress Hills, Bushwick, City Line, Oceanhill-Brownsville, East New York) introduced Intro No. 1593, a bill aimed at increasing public safety at NYC major and minor league baseball stadiums yesterday.
According to the bill, stadiums with a capacity of at least 5,000 spectators would be required to “extend protective netting from the area behind home plate to the foul poles at the end of both lines, during baseball games” and post signs “warning spectators about the danger of baseballs landing in the seating area conspicuously in all baseball stadiums, in sizes, styles and locations to be determined by the (DCA) Commissioner.”
An average of 1,750 fans are injured by foul balls and broken bats yearly. Baseball players are protected with a dugout that includes a protective fencing for ducking and shielding foul or high speed balls.
“We’re not trying to deny any fans the opportunity to catch a foul ball. Of course we still want fans to bring their gloves to the games, but the foul balls we’re trying to protect them from aren’t the ones they want. These the lines drives, which blaze into the stands at 100 miles an hour leave fans with little to no time to react. No one should ever walk into a stadium expecting a day of fun and suffer a lifetime of injuries. As a matter of public safety, our hometown teams must step up to the plate and do the right thing,” said Espinal.
Treyger Bill Passes; Helps NYC Families Save for Post-Secondary Education Costs
Council Member Mark Treyger’s (D-Coney Island, Bensonhurst) legislation designed to help families save for the cost of their children’s college or postsecondary education was signed into law today by Mayor Bill de Blasio.
The law, originally introduced as Intro 1254-A, mandates that parents or guardians of any child born in New York City receive college and postsecondary education savings plan materials from the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH).
Treyger’s bill will expand previous legislation requiring parents to receive education financial planning materials when their children enter pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, sixth grade, and ninth grade as well as providing these materials through the DOHMH website in English and each citywide language.
“As a former educator, I know firsthand that pursuing a postsecondary education has never been more cost-prohibitive. The earlier parents begin saving for their children’s postsecondary education, the higher the possibility that their children will receive one. This legislation is designed to help working families do just that by raising awareness about New York’s 529 College Savings Program and other postsecondary education savings plans and financial literacy resources.Every child deserves the chance to pursue their dreams, and the signing of this bill into law helps make that opportunity possible for more New Yorkers.” said Treyger.
Adams Calls For Economic Report On MTA Subway Woes
Brooklyn Borough President Eric L Adams called on the New York City Independent Budget Office (IBO) yesterday to conduct an economic impact analysis of the recent Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) subway outages and signal failures at the Dekalb Avenue Station.
Adams is asking for a detailed study on the lost economic productivity of hundreds of thousands of workers and the resulting impact to business in our city and state as well as lost tax revenue that the recent MTA power outages and delays is costing the city.
In the past couple of days multiple subway lines including the N/R lines in Sunset Park have been experiencing power outages and signal delays causing massive delays and confusion for MTA riders.
“After the second incident at the DeKalb Avenue subway station in just three days, throwing the commutes of tens of thousands of New Yorkers into a miserable snarl, it is time for the Governor’s Office and the MTA to prove how seriously the State takes the impact that an underfunded and outdated transit system has had on straphangers’ daily lives as well as our local and statewide economies,” said Adams.
Cumbo Announces Passage Of Sexual Health Education Bill
City Council Member Laurie A. Cumbo (D-Clinton Hill, Fort Greene, Crown Heights) announced the unanimous passage of a bill creating a sexual health education task force yesterday.
Intro. 1028-B, will create a task force comprised of a minimum of nine members, that would include at least three experts in sexual health education; one teacher from a New York City (NYC) public school; one staff person from a NYC public school who is not a teacher (such as a guidance counselor or social worker); at least two students who attend a high school; one expert in the field of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning and gender non-conforming health education, and; one representative from the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
Members will be appointed by the Mayor Bill de Blasio after consultation with the Speaker of the Council, Melissa Mark-Vivierito (D-Manhattan). Additionally, the task force would be required to submit a report to the Mayor and the Speaker by December 1, 2017 with its findings and recommendations, and may subsequently make ongoing findings and recommendations as deemed necessary by the task force.
“Across the City of New York, youth ages 12 and under are making mature, life-changing decisions about relationships and their sexuality based on peer pressure and misinformation from mass media. “I am proud that this bill will brings us one step closer to charting a new course for youth of all ages and backgrounds to engage in meaningful conversations about healthy relationships, consensual sex, pregnancy, sexually-transmitted diseases, and sexual abuse,” said Cumbo.
“It is essential that diverse and multidisciplinary perspectives are employed when creating a curriculum and teaching about human sexuality. This task force, comprised of individuals that represent a spectrum of beliefs and backgrounds, ages, various career level and life experiences, has the opportunity to infuse new ideas and voices to create an educational tool that celebrates the diversity of New Yorkers, particularly those who identify as LGBTQIA, that live and thrive here. Sexuality is much more than sexual intercourse,” concluded Cumbo.
