In a letter sent on Friday, March 20, Council Member Phil Wong is calling on the NYC Water Board and the NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to suspend the use of ratepayer funds from water and sewage bills to fund city expenses, citing cost-of-living concerns from residents.
The long-standing citywide issue follows a precedent from former Mayor Eric Adams, as the Mamdani administration is requesting a “collection of $313 million in charges imposed on the Water Board to lease the city’s water and sewer system,” according to a recent article from THE CITY. The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) was also notified, reflecting an urgent request to address the issue.
