‘Rail’-ly big deal: MTA requests proposals for largest-ever new subway car order to replace number line trains

MTA honchos on Thursday put out a call for contractors to design new subway cars that, they said, will make up the largest single such order the agency has ever placed — although the trains will not hit the tracks for at least another four years.

Janno Lieber, the MTA chair and CEO, announced the Request for Proposals (RFP) for firms to submit plans to build 1,140 new subway cars during a news conference at the agency’s rail car testing facility in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, on March 19.
