Socialist Queens Assembly Member Zohran Mamdani appears to have won the 2025 Democratic primary for mayor, an outcome many did not believe was possible three months ago.
With roughly 96% of the precincts reporting, Mamdani had 43.51% of the vote (432,305), putting him roughly 70,000 votes ahead of moderate former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who had 36.42% of the vote (361,840). Cuomo conceded the race to Mamdani on Tuesday night, though the results will become official once all ranked-choice votes are tabulated because Mamdani did not receive a majority in the first round. The official results won’t be known until at least July 1.
