Judge Norma Jennings, a Brooklyn Democrat, is running for the Kings County 6th Municipal Court District civil court seat.
The district includes areas of Park Slope, Prospect Heights, Crown Heights and Flatbush, among others.
Jennings said she intends to use her extensive background as a housing court judge and various other positions on the court to bring clarity to the law and the legal process.
“As the 6th district’s next civil court judge, I will always make it my first priority to ensure the rights of all Brooklynites who appear before me come first,” she said during a recent campaign event at the Grand Army Plaza Greenmarket. “Truth, Fairness and Justice are my principles in serving the people of Brooklyn with Dignity, Trust and Respect. Absolute impartiality and acute discretion are fundamental standards I hold dear, and I will apply them each and every day to ensure first and foremost that Justice is obtainable to all who seek it in my courtroom.”
Jennings previously served as associate court attorney, housing court judge, and currently serves as a supervising judge in NYC Housing Court. She said her experience “invaluably informs me on understanding the complex day-to-day challenges of being on the civil court. By overseeing trials and the inner workings of the courthouse and my chambers, I know firsthand the value of hands-on experience. I will devote this experience to helping all Brooklynites.”
She plans to use her many years of experience on the court to handle the responsibilities of civil court.
Looking towards the future of the borough and her campaign, Jennings said, “I am extremely honored to have the chance to represent my Brooklyn Neighbors in the 6th District as their next judge.”
Jennings was born in Paterson, New Jersey, the youngest of seven children. She was raised by her single mother and became the first member of her family to attend college.
For the last 25 years, Jennings has lived in Brooklyn with her wife, Judge Juliet Howard, and their two sons. Jennings and Howard are believed to be the first married LGBTQ+ couple appointed to the same court in New York.
