Today, we kick off our newest video interview series, In the Community with sponsored by AARP New York. Throughout this series, we will be shining a light on council members all throughout New York, giving them the opportunity to discuss their recent successes and plans for the upcoming year. In our first interview, our host Elizabeth Schneps Aloni, Senior Vice President for NYC Community News & Events at Schneps Media sat down with Council Member Jennifer Gutiérrez who represents District 34. Council Member Gutiérrez provided an immense amount of insight into the role she played within City Council over the past year working on initiatives to help constituents at every stage of life.
One of her many accomplishments includes her work on the doula services bill that was signed into law in September. Shifting focus to New York seniors and the impact of ageism, Council Member Gutiérrez broke down her intentions to help seniors throughout the community experiencing disparity. One major element Council Member Gutiérrez intends to push for as she continues her work within City Council is “capital investment to ensure senior centers are brought up to date” within her district, where seniors centers are left in the past and often in disrepair. Council Member Gutiérrez emphasized, “We cannot count our senior population out.”
