Congresswoman Grace Meng donned an apron Monday at Wasabi Point, a restaurant on Woodside Avenue in Elmhurst, where she experienced being a “server for an hour,” bringing food and drinks to customers.
Meng and Deputy Labor Secretary Julie Su joined restaurant worker advocates from One Fair Wage for the experience, which was one of the Queens stops on the coalition’s tour of New York City restaurants. The tour helps lawmakers and the community understand workers’ experiences. Plus, it draws attention to the struggles of restaurant workers earning a sub-minimum wage as tipped workers. Too often, workers are forced to tolerate inappropriate behavior from customers, managers and co-workers in order to earn tips.
”I’m very honored to have been able to participate in ‘server for an hour’ today with One Fair Wage,” Meng said. “My district in Queens was at the epicenter of the pandemic and many businesses in the area still haven’t recovered. We need to pass One Fair Wage to help the industry recover from the pandemic and to thrive.”
