New York State’s Department of Labor has been putting in overtime for the past two years. The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in a flood of requests for unemployment benefits and support for small businesses, and the DOL was responsible for making sure that assistance reached those who needed it. But while last year was the Year of Unemployment, according to Commissioner Roberta Reardon 2022 will be the Year of Workforce Development. With resources for education, information, and training – including Perkins, the DOL’s multilingual chatbot, as well as registered apprenticeships, one of Commissioner Reardon’s favorite programs – the DOL is focusing on connecting New Yorkers to careers that they love.
