State Senator Brad Hoylman (D-Chelsea, Midtown) released the following statement after the sentencing of Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein for rape and sexual assault:

“Harvey Weinstein is a criminal. He deserves to rot in jail.

“More than 100 women have come forward to accuse Harvey Weinstein of sexual assault or harassment. I applaud the courage of every woman who came forward to testify in this trial: Jessica Mann, Mimi Haley, Tarale Wulff, Dawn Dunning, Lauren Young and Annabella Sciorra.

“We’ve learned over the last few years how difficult it is for survivors to come forward and share their stories. Powerful men like Weinstein have a network of attorneys and protectors who intimidate survivors, and many – including Ms. Sciorra – came forward only after the statute of limitations had expired.”

Jackson Writes Op-Ed Opposing Austerity Measures

Yesterday, State Senator Robert Jackson (D-Washington Heights, Fort George, Inwood) published an editorial for City Limits about his views on budget justice.

Earlier this year, Governor Andrew Cuomo (D) released his proposed Fiscal Year 2021 budget. The budget includes austerity measures meant to cope with an anticipated $6 billion shortfall. However, in his article, Jackson insists that he and his peers have already drafted legislation to fill that gap.

“While Governor Cuomo plays a magic cup game of austerity, hemmed in by his own arbitrary spending cap, we true progressives have already drafted revenue-generating legislation that will fill budget holes and support these people-centered priorities,” said Jackson. “So what’s the problem?

“To offer a winnable alternative to an austerity budget, we all have to be on the same page about how much money, from which pieces of legislation, should go to what budget items. I have been speaking about this need for unity with progressive advocates in my district for several months, but now is the critical time to make it happen.”
