Rodriguez to Host Street Co-Naming Ceremony
Council Member Ydanis Rodriguez (D-Washington Heights, Inwood) will be hosting a street co-naming ceremony to commemorate Dominican Republic Independence Day.
On Feb. 27, 1844, after a six-year guerrilla war, the Dominican rebel army stormed the city of Santo Domingo and declared their independence from Haiti. To commemorate the occasion, the City will be renaming the Northeast Corner of 181st Street and Amsterdam Avenue “27 de Febrero Way”.
The event will take place on Sunday, Feb. 23 from 2:30 – 4 p.m.
De La Rosa to Speak at “Visiting is a Lifeline” Press Conference
Assemblymember Carmen De La Rosa (D-Upper Manhattan) will be joining the New York Initiative for Children of Incarcerated Parents at a press conference and rally next Wednesday.
The conference will cover the initiative’s efforts to foster positive relationships between children and their incarcerated loved ones. Assemblymembers Nily Rozic (D) and David Weprin (D) will also be speaking at the event.
The event will take place on Wednesday, Feb. 26 at 2 p.m. on the Million Dollar Staircase at the NY State Capitol Building.
Powers to Host ULURP Workshop
Council Member Keith Powers (D-Upper East Side, Carnegie Hill) will be hosting a workshop next week that focuses on the United Land Use Review Procedure (ULURP).
ULURP is the process through which the city reviews applications related to land use and zoning. Powers, in partnership with the Municipal Arts Society, will be explaining how New York citizens can get involved in the process.
The event will take place on Wednesday, Feb. 26 from 6-8 p.m. at Wagner Middle School, 220 East 76th St.
AG James Joins Lawsuit Against EPA
Last Wednesday, New York Attorney General Letitia James (D) joined a lawsuit against the EPA for its failure to act on air pollution from upwind states, despite a court mandate.
The lawsuit requests the court to declare the EPA in violation of the Clean Air Act for not addressing the upwind pollution problem affecting New York and other northeastern states. It also requests the court to order the agency to conceive a plan to do so by a specific date.
“The transport of air pollution from upwind states continues to threaten the health and safety of New Yorkers,” said James. “The federal government’s refusal to enforce the Good Neighbor Provision of the Clean Air Act allows the smog caused by upwind air pollution to go unaddressed. My office will continue to use every tool available to compel the EPA to follow the law, and take significant measures to reduce pollution.”
