Espaillat to Host National Issues Forum for Black History Month
Representative Adriano Espaillat (D-Washington Heights, Sugar Hill) will be hosting an event at the end of the month to highlight the achievements of African-Americans in his district.
“Each year during the month of February, we celebrate Black History Month and reflect on the countless contributions that African Americans have made to our nation throughout its history and recommit our work to ensure a better and more equitable society today and for generations in the future,” said Espaillat. “I will be hosting community leaders and advocates during an event in Washington to address some of the most pressing issues facing African Americans and families throughout New York’s 13th congressional district.”
The event will take place on Wednesday, Feb. 26 from 12-2 p.m. at the United States Capitol.
Stringer Calls for Legislation Creating a “Tenant Bill of Rights”
Yesterday, City Comptroller Scott M. Stringer (D) called for legislation to create a long-reaching “Tenant Bill of Rights”.
The proposed Bill of Rights would protect New York tenants by codifying their right to live in a safe, sanitary home. Stringer’s legislation would mandate the inclusion of said Bill of Rights at every lease-signing in the City.
“Twenty five years ago, almost no building had window guards and children were left at risk,” said Stringer. “Then a law was passed mandating that landlords discuss the installation of window guards at every lease signing, and now we are a safer city. Lease signings are an opportunity to make sure that everyone’s rights are upheld, and we should be leveraging these critical meetings to hold landlords accountable.”
Krueger Releases Statement Regarding Global Divestment Day
Yesterday, State Senator Liz Krueger (D-Upper East Side, Lenox Hill) released a statement recognizing Feb. 13 as Global Divestment Day.
Global Divestment Day, founded in 2015 by the environmental organization 350.org, is an internationally recognized holiday meant to encourage local governments to divest from fossil fuels and develop sustainable energy sources.
“With every passing month the writing on the wall becomes clearer,” said Krueger. “Fossil fuel producers are a bad long-term investment, both for the bottom line of pension funds and university endowments, and for the lives and health of the people those pensions and universities are supposed to serve. That is why I continue to advocate for the swift and full divestment of the New York State pension fund from fossil fuels.”
Brewer to Host Chinatown Lunch Crawl
Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer (D) and her staff will be hosting a “Chinatown Lunch Crawl” today.
In response to the “Show Some Love for Chinatown” campaign, Brewer and her staff will be patronizing several Chinatown restaurants to assist struggling businesses in the neighborhood. The stops are as follows:
- Nom Wah Tea Parlor, 13 Doyers St.
- Mei Lai Wah, 64 Bayard St.
- Bo Ky Restaurant, 80 Bayard St.
The crawl will begin today at 12:30 p.m. at 1 Centre St. South.
