Maloney Endorsed by Grand Street Democrats
Earlier this week, the Grand Street Democrats announced their endorsement of Representative Carolyn Maloney (D-Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens) for re-election.
In his announcement to members, Club President Jeremy Sherber praised Maloney for securing funding for 9/11 first responders, supporting the Equal Rights Amendment, and her appointment to the House Oversight Committee.
“The Grand Street Dems are one of our city’s most active and progressive clubs,” said Maloney. “I am thrilled and honored that they’re once again putting their faith in me to represent our district in Congress.”
Taylor to Host 2nd Annual Dominican Heritage Awards
Assemblymember Al Taylor (D-Hamilton Heights, Harlem, Washington Heights) will be hosting the second annual Dominican Heritage Awards today.
The ceremony will honor six noteworthy Dominican-American community members for their contributions to the neighborhood. Taylor is hosting the event in collaboration with Representative Adriano Espaillat (D-Washington Heights, Sugar Hill), Assemblymember Carmen de la Rosa (D-Upper Manhattan), Council Member Ydanis Rodriguez (D-Washington Heights, Inwood) and State Senator Robert Jackson (D-Washington Heights, Fort George).
The event will take place today from 12-2 p.m. at the Alianza Dominicana Cultural Center, 530 West 166th St.
AG James Delivers Restitution for Wage Theft Victims
Yesterday, Attorney General Letitia James (D) announced a $250,000 settlement with ambulette company Cathay Express Transportation for swindling 125 employees out of their wages.
In addition to having Cathay pay employees back their earned wages, the state will be monitoring the company’s payment practices for two years.
“Every New Yorker is entitled to a fair day’s wage for a fair day’s work,” said James. “These ambulette drivers provide a crucial service to some of the most vulnerable in our communities, and it’s completely unacceptable that they were cheated out of wages that they earned. My office will fight to ensure all workers—irrespective of where they live or their country of origin—receive the compensation that they are owed.”
Powers Commends De Blasio for Proposal to Limit Security Deposits
Council Member Keith Powers (D-Upper East Side, Carnegie Hill) released a statement yesterday, commenting on Mayor Bill de Blasio’s (D) new proposal to abolish security deposits for apartments that the city helps finance.
“Over the past year, I have worked with my colleagues in the City Council to focus on reducing the impact of the high costs of renting an apartment, particularly on low-income New Yorkers,” said Powers. “Whether it’s security deposits or broker fees, the system has been stacked against the average New Yorker and created financial instability for too long.
“I commend Mayor de Blasio on his proposal regarding alternatives to security deposits through giving renters the option to pay through insurance or in installments. I also want to thank Council Member Rivera for her partnership and leadership on these issues. I look forward to expanding these efforts to help thousands of New Yorkers and make New York City more affordable.”
