DC 37 Endorses Carolyn Maloney
On Wednesday, the labor union DC 37 formally endorsed Representative Carolyn Maloney (D-Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens) for re-election.
DC 37 is one of the largest labor unions in the City, representing 25,000 public employees, 25,000 private sector workers, and nearly 50,000 retirees.
“The worker protections we enjoy today – a five-day workweek, safety regulations, limitations on employer exploitation – are all a direct result of work done by unions and working people,” said Maloney. “DC 37 has been a powerful ally in battling against the administration’s efforts to undermine this, and in ensuring all workers are treated with dignity and respect. I am honored that my work and record have earned their endorsement.”
Rodriguez to Host Press Conference on Taxi Medallion Task Force Report
Today, Council Member Ydanis Rodriguez (D-Washington Heights, Inwood) will be leading a press conference explaining the findings in the recently published report from the Taxi Medallion Task Force.
Rodriguez, Co-Chair of said task force, will be joining fellow Co-Chair Stephen Levin (D-Brooklyn). The task force’s objective is to identify changes in the Medallion economy and provide recommendations to address them.
The event will take place today at 1 p.m. on the steps of City Hall.
Hoylman Releases Statement on Anniversary of CVA
State Senator Brad Hoylman (D-Chelsea, Midtown) released a statement earlier this week recognizing the anniversary of the passage of the Child Victims Act (CVA).
Hoylman was the lead Senate sponsor of the CVA, which passed the legislature on Jan. 28 last year. The law extends the statute of limitations for prosecuting child sexual abuse cases.
“Since the Child Victims Act was passed one year ago today, New York has witnessed a watershed moment for survivors of child sexual abuse,” said Hoylman. “I’m proud our landmark legislation has already allowed over 1,700 survivors to pursue justice against their abusers and the institutions that may have protected them, as well as increasing public safety by identifying predators who may have escaped detection.”
AG James Fights to Protect Children in Civil Immigration Detention
On Wednesday, NY Attorney General Letitia James (D), as part of a coalition of 20 attorney general, filed an amicus brief in support of the plaintiffs in Flores v. Barr.
The case involves the Trump Administration’s attempts to terminate the Flores Settlement Agreement, which governs the treatment of children in immigration custody. In the amicus brief, James and her peers urge the U.S. Court of Appeals to uphold a prior permanent injunction preventing the federal government from keeping children in indefinite detention.
“The Trump Administration’s illegal and immoral efforts to lock children in cages is a shameful and appalling action that should strike a nerve with every person in this country,” said James. “All of us, regardless of national origin, deserve to be treated with basic dignity, but the president continues to use immigrants, including young children, as political pawns in his twisted game of chess. Regardless of one’s nation of origin, all people deserve to be treated with decency, which is why our coalition will continue our fight to stop the Trump Administration’s cruel, inhumane, and xenophobic actions.”
