The following are a few of my favorite stories that KCP posted in 2019 in no particular order:
Court Rules Against City, Millions of Dollars Of Wealth Restored
By Stephen Witt and Kelly Mena
In many ways this story was the culmination of my and former KCP senior Editor Kelly Mena‘s Third Party Transfer series. The story tells how six property owners received their properties back and with it millions of dollars of equity that was taken from the black community. Both Kelly and I literally dropped a few tears of joy. Kelly has since gone on to become a CNN politics reporter in Washington DC.
Bushwick’s Puerto Rican Day Parade Shows Hispanic Unity Amid Gentrification
By Joseph De La Cruz
An excellent story full of pride and joy that recalls Bushwick back in the day before gentrification when it was a tight-knit Latino community.
Op-Ed: A Midwood Déjà Vu: From Murrow to Urban Dove
By Martin Samoylov
This op-ed was posted very recently, but I really liked its sense of history including links to old stories. Very well-written piece.
Rent Money Cockfight
By Garth Miro
Hands down my favorite Friday Fiction story. Garth’s frenetic energy and style is always engaging, and his depiction of society’s underbelly is a side of the city and the country that needs telling.
One Year After Election Salazar Still Doesn’t Have District Office
By Bernadette DeVito
Contrary to what some thought, this was not a slight on either State Sen. Julia Salazar or the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). It was good government reporting 101, and we are happy to see the good senator now has a district office.
Brooklyn Celebrates The Tobagonian Diaspora
By Louric Rankine
Lourie, our summer intern from East New York, was quite a find. He had a real nose for news that generated a ton of hits. Here he covered a festival for immigrants from Tobago, which shares the Caribbean island with Trinidad.
Brooklyn Throws Bar Mitzvah Boy Out With Party Boat Water
By Stephen Witt
Interesting story. Funny headline.
Sanders Kick-Off Rally Lacks Brooklyn Diversity
By Kelly Mena
Good op-ed from Kelly. She made some interesting points and drew a lot of heat from Bernie-bros.
