Espaillat to Rally For DACA Recipients

U.S. Rep. Adriano Espaillat

Representative Adriano Espaillat (D-Washington Heights, Sugar Hill) will be holding a press conference today in support of the plaintiffs of DHS v. Regents of California. Espaillat will be joined by representatives from the Northern Manhattan Coalition for Immigrant Rights (NMCIR).

The court case is related to the Trump administration’s revocation of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. Espaillat has long held the opinion that the Administration’s termination of the program was unlawful and violated the Administrative Procedure Act (APA).

The event will take place today at 11 a.m. outside Espaillat’s district office, 720 West 181st St.

Council Member Mark Levine (D-Manhattan Valley, Manhattanville) wrote an editorial for The Uptown Collective last Friday, making the case for creating residential parking permits for NYC.

In the article, Levine argues that suburban commuters from out of state are clogging up the streets that Northern Manhattanites rely on. The problem, he says, is both an inconvenience to other drivers and a danger to pedestrians and cyclists.

“This problem will only get worse when congestion pricing is implemented below 60th Street,” said Levine. “It’s time to put an end to this. Let’s follow every other big city in America and create residential parking permits in New York City.”

Hoylman Introduces Bill Banning Unnecessary Surgery for Intersex Children

State Senator Brad Hoylman (D-Chelsea, Midtown) recently introduced legislation that would outlaw “medically unnecessary” surgeries on intersex children.

The announcement came on Nov. 8, recognized internationally as Intersex Day of Solidarity. The bill would require medical officials to receive informed consent from intersex minors before performing non-essential treatment on them or altering their sex characteristics.

“Experts estimate there are more than 140,000 New Yorkers with intersex traits—they deserve autonomy over their bodies,” said Hoylman. “Yet many intersex people are forced to undergo unnecessary and irreversible surgeries that can cause physical pain and emotional distress. To craft this legislation, I’ve listened closely to the intersex community—including the wonderful advocates at interACT: Advocates for Intersex Youth—and learned about the unique experience they face. I am confident this bill is a safe, responsible way to protect the rights of all intersex New Yorkers.”

Maloney Honors Career of Rep. Pete Visclosky

Representative Carolyn Maloney (D-Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens) released a statement last Saturday giving her regards to the now-retired Representative Pete Visclosky (D-IN).

After serving for over three decades, Visclosky announced his retirement last Wednesday. Maloney had nothing but kind words to say about the senior Democrat, calling him a tireless worker on behalf of the working class.

“Congressman Pete Visclosky has made a real difference for Indiana’s working families and people throughout our nation during his three decades of service,” said Maloney. “He’s been a fierce and successful advocate for improving the lives of so many Americans. I wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors and will greatly miss his leadership and friendship.”
