New York City Council Majority Leader Laurie A. Cumbo (D-Fort Greene, Clinton Hill, Prospect Heights, Crown Heights) last night sponsored a LIEN Sale Outreach session at the Friends of Crown Heights Educational Center yesterday evening.

Come speak to a DOF, DEP, or HPD representative about your tax, water, or emergency repair lien(s). Discuss your options for preventing the sale of your lien and avoid future lien sales. Financial counselors will be available to help you make informed decisions.

Representatives from the city’s Department of Finance (DOF), the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), and the Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) were on hand to speak with property owners about their back taxes, water bills or emergency repair lien(s).

The event was slated so these property owner constituents could discuss their options for preventing the sale of lien and avoid future lien sales. Financial counselors were also on hand help you constituents make informed decisions.

Cumbo said that the seniors in the community are most impacted being that they are known as “house rich and cash poor.”

“One of things that challenges our offices often is that people get frustrated with having to go from office to office or agency to agency and dealing with issues around tax liens are scary enough. For many of our seniors it’s hard to run up and down so we wanted to take out all the stresses of trying to find where to go and who to go to and make it one space where you can come and have all of your questions answered. We did it after work, come get information and not be ashamed. Don’t wait in silence,” said Cumbo.

While this isn’t her first time organizing this kind of event, Cumbo said she plans on doing this kind of informational session twice a year. She also would like if people from other districts to come in and take advantage of the services.

Along with this informational session, Cumbo has created a number of informational services that further service the community such as Free Immigration and Housing services at her District Office Wednesdays and Thursdays respectively.
