The world’s first all-electric international single-seater auto championship is back in the heart of Brooklyn.
Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams announced on Tuesday that the ABB FIA Formula E Championship will take place at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal in Red Hook later this month for the third year in a row.
Red Hook will be the site of the final two races of the season and the only one this year set in the States, according to Bloomberg News.
Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) President Jean Todt and Spanish businessman Alejandro Agag formulated the idea for the all-electric street racing series at a restaurant in Paris back in 2011.
The intention was to demonstrate the potential of sustainable mobility to create a cleaner world. The race made its global debut on the grounds of Olympic Park in Beijing in 2014. Since its debut, Formula E has grown into a global entertainment brand with motor-sport at its center.
At yesterday’s announcement, NYC E-Prix provided a car on-site, for added sexiness.
“Formula E is so unique because it’s an all-electric motorsport, which differentiates it from events like NASCAR. That makes it enjoyable and environmentally friendly,” said Adams.
Along with its heady entertainment value, the series uniquely functions as a competition for manufacturers to test and develop road relevant technologies. Industry heavyweights like Jaguar, Nissan, BMW, Audi, DS and Mahindra are all providers.
“This year,” said Adams, “we are proud to have the E-Prix back in Brooklyn – 22 drivers and 11 teams will compete to be crowned the winner.”
The event weekend including the race is slated for July 13 and 14. Tickets are $12 and include access to Allianz E-Village, a festival the website refers to as an “immersive Fan Zone.” Here, food and games will be provided as well as an autograph session with the drivers themselves.
