Powers’ Committee Reviews To Proposed Bail Reform Measures

City Council Member Keith Powers (D-Upper East Side, Carnegie Hill, Yorkville, Central Park South, Midtown East, Times Square, Koreatown, Stuyvesant Town and Peter Cooper Village, Waterside Plaza, Tudor City, Turtle Bay, Murray Hill, Sutton Place), chair of the council’s Committee on Criminal Justice today will have the committee hear two proposed local laws regarding bail reform.

The first measure would require the Department of Correction (“DOC”) to notify incarcerated individuals and defense attorneys when an incarcerated individual is detained solely on a bail amount of less than ten dollars.

This second bill would remove the 2.49% fee charged on credit card payments of cash bail made using the online bail payment system, and would also remove the 8% fee charged on credit card payments of cash bail made in person.

The public hearing is slated for 10 a.m., today, April 9 at City Hall in Lower Manhattan.

Rosenthal, Kallos Applaud De Blasio’s First Ever Youth Civics Week

City Council Members Helen Rosenthal (D-Central Park, Lincoln Square, Upper West Side, Clinton) and Ben Kallos (D-Upper East Side’s Yorkville, Lenox Hill, Carnegie Hill, Roosevelt Island, Midtown East, Sutton Place, El Barrio in East Harlem) yesterday lauded the de Blasio Administration launch of the city’s most robust civic engagement effort at schools of all grade levels and colleges across New York City.

Dubbed DemocracyNYC, the effort will encourage students to register to vote and participate in the City’s first-ever Civics Week program, which aims to increase civic participation and empower the voices of New York City students.

During Civics Week, students at Department of Education schools will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities that will help students hone their public speaking skills, encourage them to participate in Participatory Budgeting, connect students with community leaders and elected officials, and give students an opportunity to participate in town halls to discuss issues that matter to them and their communities.

“This week, high school and college students across New York City will have an incredible opportunity to learn firsthand about civic participation, both in and out of the voting booth. It cannot be overstated how vital it is to our democracy that young New Yorkers understand the many ways they can make their voices heard,” said Rosenthal. “In 2015, my office launched Student Voter Registration Day, which brought thousands of New York City high school students on to the voter rolls, and thanks to Mayor de Blasio’s DemocracyNYC initiative, opportunities for youth civic engagement only continue to grow.”

Many of these partnering locations will offer special tours and access to the public, along with deals, treats, and promotions, including special 1969-themed cocktails, happy hours, and other promotions
