Assemblywoman Mathylde Frontus (D-Coney Island, Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights) and a group of Coney Island residents have spearheaded a new Democratic club which will focus on voter registration, youth engagement and promoting increased political literacy in the local community.
Dubbed The Seaside Independent Democrats, the club seeks to engage all southern Brooklyn residents and will add to the vibrant political landscape of southern Brooklyn.
Frontus emphasized the group is not competing or at odds with any other group. It is adding diversity and focusing on civic engagement and will collaborate with other clubs in southern Brooklyn, she said.
Among the other political clubs in very politically active Southern Brooklyn include the United Progressive Democratic Club, which Assemblyman Bill Colton and City Council Member Mark Treyger operate from; the Bay Ridge Democrats, which City Council Member Justin Brannan and State Sen. Andrew Gounardes operate from; the Bay Democrats, which Democratic District Leaders Ari Kagan and Margarita Kagan (no relation) operate from, the Stars and Stripes Democratic Club, which Assembly Member Peter Abbate operates from, and the Shorefront Democrats, which female Democratic District leader Delia Schack operates from; and The 41st Assembly District Democrats on Avenue R and Nostrand Avenue, which District Leaders Lew Fidler and Lori Maslow as well as Assembly Member Helene Weinstein operate from.
The Seaside Independent Democrats first meeting is slated for between 6-8, this Wednesday, Feb. 6 at the Naomi A.M. E. Zion Church, 2502 Neptune Avenue. Below is the flier.
