Public Defender Tiffany Cabán may have just recently entered the race for District Attorney last week, but she may soon gain enough support in the coming weeks to take on political heavyweights like Queens Borough President Melinda Katz and Councilman Rory Lancman (D-Hillcrest).

On Jan. 29, members of the Queens Branch of the Democratic Socialists of America overwhelmingly voted to recommend Cabán for an endorsement to the larger Citywide Leadership Committee at a meeting in Jackson Heights.

Cabán, a South Richmond Hill native, received 93 percent of votes by members of the Queens Branch for the recommendation, according to Aaron Taube, an organizer for Queens DSA.

“The vote that took place last night was the second step in a multi-step process that may or may not conclude with New York City DSA endorsing Cabán for Queens District Attorney,” said Taube.

To receive an endorsement by the Citywide Leadership Committee, Cában would need a 60 percent majority vote from the elected body containing all branches from across the city, according to Taube.

The final vote for endorsement will occur on Feb. 10 by the CLC, according to the NYC-DSA spokeswoman.

U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-Elmhurst) was rumored to have endorsed Cában, but according to her spokesman Corbin Trent, she has not made a decision on the race.

“We have not made any endorsement in the race for Queens District Attorney as of yet,” said Trent.
