Incumbent State Sen. Martin Malave Dilan (D-Bushwick, Bedford-Stuyvesant, East New York, Ocean Hill/Brownsville) was the target of vandalism earlier today at his district office.
Earlier this afternoon, a reporter from the Brooklyn College of Journalism, Hannah Grossman, found the words “Homeless kids want Dilan out,” spray painted on the gate of the building located at 3215 Fulton Street in North Brooklyn.
The vandals appeared to be supporters of Dilan’s primary opponent Julia Salazar, leaving behind a Salazar flier wedged between the steel grating and the storefront.
“This is unworthy of a campaign for state senate, and I hope Ms. Salazar quickly denounces this and tells her supporters to knock it off,” said Bob Liff, a Dilan campaign spokesperson.
Salazar, a self-proclaimed Democratic Socialist, is locked in a competitive New York State primary vote with Dilan in the 18th Senate District.
At hearing news of the incident, Salazar completely denounced the behavior and was disturbed by the event at such a crucial time.
“Vandalism like this has no place in Brooklyn politics. I have no idea who is responsible for this disturbing incident, but I believe acts like this are an obstacle to positive change in North Brooklyn,” said Salazar.
Liff said the incident was reported to the local precinct, but no arrests or detainments have been made at post time. There are no suspects in the case either.
