BP Adams, NYC Health & Hospitals Launch New Plant-Based Health Program

Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams

Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams alongside NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue announced yesterday the launch of a new pilot program to help patients transition to a healthy lifestyle that includes a whole-foods, plant-based diet.

The Plant-Based Lifestyle Medicine Program is designed to serve as an intensive resource for adult patients with chronic disease who wish to reduce their cardiometabolic risk through healthful lifestyle changes, including following a diet that emphasizes legumes, whole grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds, and reduces animal products, fried foods, refined grains, and added sugars. The diet program aims to tackle chronic conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, obesity, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure.

The $400,000 pilot program is funded by NYC Health + Hospitals and will be open to at least 100 patients from all five boroughs. Doctors, nurses, dietitians, and life coaches will work with patients to change their lifestyles and eating patterns. Staff is already being recruited for the program, which is expected to launch in Fall 2018 and will be evaluated after six months.

Lifestyle medicine is a scientific approach to decreasing the risk of disease and the burden of illness by using evidence-based lifestyle interventions such as nutrition, physical activity, stress reduction, and smoking cessation.

The pilot program is a result of Adams’ advocacy around plant-based nutrition. Since positively experiencing the life-changing effects of a plant-based diet, Adams has remained focused on bringing its powerful health benefits to the rest of the city. The nutritional program was born out of a meeting Adams had with Deputy Mayor Herminia Palacio, NYC Health + Hospitals leaders, including Dr. Michelle McMacken, director of the NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue Adult Weight Management Program, and other plant-based nutrition experts.

“This clinic will champion a new paradigm for health care in New York and beyond, one in which patients gain freedom not only from debilitating, life-threatening chronic diseases but also from the harsh side effects and reduced quality of life associated with traditional, less effective treatments. The power of plant-based diets allowed me to reverse my Type 2 diabetes, and I’m elated that through this clinic, it will do the same — and more — for countless New Yorkers,” said Adams.

Colton Applauds MTA’s Revised Plan For SBS Service On B82 Route

Assembly Member William Colton

Assembly member Williams Colton (D-Gravesend, Bath Beach, Bensonhurst, Dyker Heights) applauded the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) yesterday for their revised plan to bring bus-only lanes to the B82 bus route in South Brooklyn.

Earlier this year, Colton collected numerous petitions against the MTA’s initial plan to have bus-only lanes along Kings Highway between Bay Parkway and Ocean Avenue for Select Bus Service (SBS) to the B82 bus route. The petitions also included a letter detailing the community’s opposition and the disastrous consequences it would have on the neighborhood.

The new revised plan significantly reduces the number of Bus-Only lanes along Kings Highway from 28 to 8. This new change will restore almost 100 of the 169 parking spaces that the original plan threatened to take away.

Under the final revised plan which will start  October 1, only adjacent to subway stations, bus-only lanes will be in effect seven days a week from 7am-7pm. Pedestrian plazas and additional parking spaces will be created on Kings Highway where Quentin Road merges, eastbound at West 11th Street and westbound at West 10th Street.  A proposed left turn, ban from Kings Highway on West 7 and West 8 Streets will be put on hold until further study is done. New parking meters will be placed between West 12 and West 13 Streets on Kings Highway.

“I thank the elected officials, the community and their leaders for coming together and speaking up, I look forward to continue working together on numerous issues”.  Colton also stated it is by working together we can make a difference,” said Colton.

Persaud To Host Senior Resource Day 2018

State Sen. Roxanne Persaud

State Senator Roxanne J. Persaud (D-Canarsie, East New York, Brownsville, Mill Basin, Sheepshead Bay, Bergen Beach, Marine Park, Flatlands, Mill Island, Georgetown, Ocean Hill,  Starrett City) will bring city resources and agencies to the district next week.

As part of an annual event, Persaud play host to dozens of seniors from Senate District 19, providing lunch, snacks, music, and access to vital information in a fun-filled environment for Senior Resource Day 2018. The event includes opportunities for networking and socializing, raffle giveaways, entertainment, refreshments, opportunities for pampering and self-care.

Over 30 agencies will be present at the event to provide information to the active adults in the district, including NYS Department of Public Service, Downstate Hospital, AARP, MTA NYC Transit, NYC Fire Department, Brookdale Hospital, NYC Department of Environmental Protection, Brooklyn District Attorney – Elder Abuse and SNAP.

“Many of our seniors have restricted resources at their disposal, or limited mobility, however, they continue to thrive. Many are not aware of the services for which they are eligible. I am delighted to connect our seniors to agencies, organizations, community resources, and services they need to remain empowered!” said Persaud.

“In addition, if seniors know where to find vital information and what is happening in the community, they will be more independent and less likely to suffer from the actions of unscrupulous scammers. I celebrate our seniors and will continue to work to ensure they are treated with dignity so that they will live life to the fullest,” added Persaud.

The event is slated for 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 6, at 1222 East 96th Street in Canarsie.
