With the Congressional primary completed Democratic candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is set to face Republican Anthony Pappas in the general election with the winner representing constituents of New York’s 14th Congressional district.
The district includes the Queens neighborhoods of Sunnyside, Astoria, College Point, East Elmhurst, Jackson Heights, Corona and Woodside as well as part of the Bronx.
Whoever wins the contest will have to confront what both House Democrats and Republicans consider one of the most pressing pieces of issue-oriented legislation before them. Namely immigration – both the undocumented in this country and those coming into this country.
So with that in mind, QCP asked both Pappas and Ocasio-Cortez, the following question and below that is their answers.
As a member of Congress, what immigration bill would you go along with that you think could realistically make it out of Congress and get to the president’s desk and why?
Pappas: “The immigration bill should provide for secure borders and specify the annual number of legal immigrants. Enforcement would also be necessary. The objective should be to resolve immigration growing forward so that it does not become a perennial problem. There should also be a resolution to the problem of the undocumented already in this country with a path to citizenship for certain categories with stipulated conditions.”
The Ocasio-Cortez campaign blew through two deadlines and did not provide an answer despite repeated requests since Monday.
The general election is Nov. 6.
