Cumbo Announces Expansion of Crisis Management System to the 88th Precinct
City Council Majority Leader Laurie A. Cumbo (D-Fort Greene, Clinton Hill, Crown Heights) announced the expansion of the Crisis Management System to the 88th Precinct/Police Service Area 3 yesterday.
Cumbo was joined by Eric Cumberbatch, Executive Director of the Mayor’s Office to Combat Gun Violence and Shanduke McPhatter, Founder of Gangstas Making Astronomical Community Changes (GMACC) for the announcement on Tuesday.
The Crisis Management deploys teams of “credible messengers” who mediate conflicts on the street and connect high-risk individuals to services that can reduce the long-term risk of violence. Over the last 3 years, CMS has contributed to a 15 percent decline in shootings in the 17 highest violence precincts in New York City. The FY19 budget provides a total of $35.8 million for CMS.
GMACC is a leading anti-violence organization and a key leader in this expansion. GMACC works with “at risk” individuals and the community through conflict mediation, community engagement, and transitional support.
“Community leadership must remain central, uplifted, and supported in our efforts to prevent gun violence in our communities. There remains an epidemic of such violence and I thank The Mayor’s Office to Prevent Gun Violence and GMACC for their leadership in bringing the Crisis Management System to the 88th Precinct/PSA 3. We must look to our community-based organizations, art institutions, schools, houses of worship, mental health practitioners and most importantly the members of the community, as holding solutions to combating the epidemic of gun violence,” said Cumbo.
Adams, Cornegy To Officially Declare July 11th “Brooklyn Patriots’ Day”
Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams and City Council member Robert Cornegy, Jr. (D-Bedford-Stuyvesant, Northern Crown Heights) will join local veterans and first responders groups to declare July 11, 2018 as “Brooklyn Patriots’ Day” today.
The Day will honor and recognize the service of Brooklyn’s American heroes, as well as honoring the history of Fort Greene in the Revolutionary War as the home of democracy. Fort Greene played a pivotal role in the Battle of Brooklyn, where there were thousands of American casualties, in what was the first major battle of the Revolutionary War after America declared its independence.
It is reported that over 11,000 Americans died on prison ships in New York’s East River, thousands of whom were captured during the Battle of Brooklyn. The borough also played a major role in every major military conflict, notably sending over 300,000 soldiers to war during World War II.
The event is slated for 8:45 a.m., today, July 11, at 176 Myrtle Avenue in Fort Greene.
BK Lawmakers Weigh In On Kavanaugh Supreme Court Nomination
Congressman Dan Donovan (R-South Brooklyn, Staten Island), State Senator Marty Golden (R-C-I, Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights, Bensonhurst, Marine Park, Gerritsen Beach, Gravesend, Manhattan Beach), and Assembly member Nicole Malliotakis (R-Bay Ridge, Staten Island) weighed in on the recent nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court yesterday.
On Monday night, President Donald Trump officially selected Kavanaugh as his second Supreme Court justice. The nomination comes just weeks after Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy announced his retirement this summer.
The pick has many Democrats worried about the future of women’s rights, particularly the overturning of Roe V. Wade, the landmark 1973 decision that guaranteed a woman’s right to an abortion.
“Brett Kavanaugh is a brilliant legal mind who will uphold the Constitution and interpret the law, not legislate from the bench. He has a record of enforcing the text and original intent of our country’s founding document and of protecting private citizens from government overreach. President Trump made an inspired choice, and I hope the Senate confirms Judge Kavanaugh quickly,” said Donovan.
“Judge Kavanaugh is an eminently qualified jurist who will, I hope and expect, receive support from both Republicans and Democrats in the US Senate. A foundational hallmark of American democracy is our independent judiciary. Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination, and his future service on the Supreme Court, will be a credit to our country,” said Golden.
“President Trump’s nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh is a good one and shows how dedicated he is to ensuring the Supreme Court upholds the rule of law and preserves the values on which our nation was founded, such as religious liberty and separation of powers. Judge Kavanaugh is well respected, has extensive experience and will interpret the Constitution as it was written, which is exactly what Americans should expect from a Supreme Court Justice,” said Malliotakis.
Golden Marks Installation of Wheelchair Lift At Home of Student Fighting Lyme Disease
State Senator Martin J. Golden (R-C-I, Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights, Bensonhurst, Marine Park, Gerritsen Beach, Gravesend, Manhattan Beach) will mark the installation of a wheelchair lift at the home of a Bath Beach student fighting Lyme Disease today.
Golden will join Julia Bruzzese and her family as a wheelchair gets erected at her home on Wednesday.
Julia Bruzzese suddenly became paralyzed in 2015 at the age of 12 years old, forcing her to become wheelchair bound. Following the diagnosis the young woman received a blessing from Pope Francis at John F. Kennedy (JFK) Airport in September 2015 on his visit to New York City.
The event is slated for 2 p.m., today, July 11, at Julia’s Home at 57 Bay 17th Street in Bath Beach.
Mayor, BP Adams, Cornegy Celebrate Marcy Houses Community Center Groundbreaking
Mayor Bill de Blasio alongside Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams and City Council member Robert Cornegy, Jr. (D-Bedford-Stuyvesant, Northern Crown Heights) will celebrate the groundbreaking of a new community center at the Marcy Houses in Bedford Stuyvesant today.
The new center at the New York City Housing Authority’s (NYCHA) Marcy Houses is the first in over 20 years and will be a welcome addition in the 27-building facility that houses more than 4,000 residents. The center will be located in what remains of a vacant police station at the corner of Marcy Avenue and Ellery Street, and the renovation and conversion of the site is being funded by $7 million in City capital funds.
The Marcy Community Center is the culmination of decades of advocacy by tenants and efforts on the part of Cornegy to secure the funding necessary to bring the project to fruition. In April 2015, the Central Brooklyn lawmaker approached NYCHA officials about the possibility of creating a dedicated gathering space for the community.
After scoping the vacant police station as a good location, Cornegy allocated $5 million dollars over the course of two budget cycles in 2015-16, and Adams kicked in an additional $1 million. In 2017, Mayor de Blasio allocated the final $1 million needed to fund the creation the new space.
The event is slated for 1 p.m., today, July 11, at the Marcy Houses, at the corner of Marcy Avenue & Ellery Street in Bedford-Stuyvesant.
